LONDON - Author J.K. Rowling said two characters will die in the last installment of her boy wizard series, and she hinted Harry Potter might not survive either.
"I have never been tempted to kill him off before the final because I've always planned seven books, and I want to finish on seven books," Rowling said on Monday's "Richard and Judy" television show.
"I can completely understand, however, the mentality of an author who thinks, `Well, I'm gonna kill them off because that means there can be no non-author written sequels. So it will end with me, and after I'm dead and gone they won't be able to bring back the character'."
Rowling declined to commit herself about Harry, saying she doesn't want to receive hate mail.
"The last book is not finished. But I'm well into it now. I wrote the final chapter in something like 1990, so I've known exactly how the series is going to end," she said.
Rowling said people are sometimes shocked to hear that she wrote the end of book seven before she had a publisher for the first book in the series.
"The final chapter is hidden away, although it's now changed very slightly. One character got a reprieve. But I have to say two die that I didn't intend to die," she said. "A price has to be paid. We are dealing with pure evil here. They don't target extras do they? They go for the main characters. Well, I do."
Rowling is the richest woman in Britain _ wealthier than even the queen _ with a fortune estimated by Forbes magazine last year at more than $1 billion.
Whatever she writes next, Rowling is sure of one thing: It won't be as successful as Harry Potter.
"I don't think I'm ever going to have anything like Harry again. You just get one like Harry."
Harry has to kill Snape as revenge for Dumbledore. My money's on a Weasley for the other - Ron or Ginny.
As long as she doesn't kill Hermione, I'm cool.
Hermione is Rowling's alter ego in the fantasy world. No way an author kills "herself" off.
My money is going to Lupin (Wormtail has a sterling silver hand, afterall) and McGonagell (I'm sure I butchered her name). Remember when she yelled to Umbridge (paraphrased), "I'll make sure Harry Potter is an auror if it's the last thing I ever do!"
~Or~
Possibly Draco Malfoy-- just because he's such a little wussy mamma's boy.
I thought McGonagal was a goner in #5 when she took 4 stunners to the chest.
Amen!!!
Sez you! ;^P
I never thought about Hagrid. He just seems indestructible.
Yeah but Hagrid would take one for the team.
Me too. She's a tough cookie.
Yeah, he would. He may go down, but I think he'd make darn sure he took 5 or 6 of their guys down with him.
Supposedly, since HPGOF there have
always been clues about the coming story
lines. Because of the many times Harry
has stated that Hogwarts is his HOME,
and having assured Lucius Malfoy that
he, Harry, "will always be at Hogwartz
to guard against future dark forces,"
I've come to see Harry as the destined
Head Master of the school. And I also
don't believe Dumbledore is dead; too
aligned with the Phoenix resurrection
and the Pence Font.
As for the two kids to be killed off,
I'm suggesting Lucius' son Malfoy as one
of them. In "The Half-Blood Prince," we
saw Malfoy making some really strange
choices of action and loyalty. He's
absolutely agog at being chosen by The
Dark Lord as a servant, despite the
attempts of Dumbledore to prevent it.
The other Hogwarts kiddo who is my
candidate for extraction is Neville
Longbottom. Voltemort had used the
Excruciatious Curse on Neville's
parents and they are still locked
up in the Asylum. I anticipate Neville
running afoul of Voltemort in some
kind of revenge scene, with Neville
losing the battle. Again as per clues
in the various books.
She will kill Kenny, They always do.
Shades of Rudy on 24.
Neville's had a hard life. Both parents tortured into insanity then raised by his strict grandmother. Not good at sports or academics. I don't think JK would kill him.
So there won't be a "Gone with the Wizard?"
Let's see, isn't the story that Neville was born on the same day as Harry? And the 'prophecy' about "the chosen one" could apply to either Harry or Neville?
I'm guessing that Neville is, in fact, the chosen one. The twist would be incredible.
And agreed, Dumbledore isn't dead for good. The phoenix connection and all seems to foreshadow that.
I'm thinking of what happened in 'Dragonslayer', where the wizard had himself killed on purpose, as a precedent/influence.
That thought has occurred to me as well.
