Linux isn't a threat to Windows on the desktop and is losing steam on the server as customers separate the operating system from the development model, according to Microsoft's chief platform strategist.
Bill Hilf, general manager of competitive strategy at Microsoft, said pundits have predicted for years that Linux will gain momentum on the desktop, but that won't happen because of the complexity involved in delivering a tightly integrated and tested desktop product.

And alpha chips are mad fast too.
You sure those people knew what it was that they had on their hands?
I'm running 10.1 right now, The only two issues I've seen is that well known ZMD/red carpet/update issue, and I've been having alot of problems running Neverwinter Nights.
Wanted to try gentoo but the lack of a graphical installer kept me away.
I like having a GUI based central control point for most/all system settings.(YAST)
I've been running it for about 2 mos now with no troubles at all.
yea I tried it... its pretty fast but the setup required is a little to much IMHO... Maybe I should give Sabayon Linux (formerly RR4 Linux and RR64 Linux) a shot...
From distrowatch.com
Sabayon Linux (formerly RR4 Linux and RR64 Linux)
Sabayon Linux is a live DVD designed to transform a computer into a powerful Gentoo Linux system in less than 5 minutes. Gentoo Linux is a Linux distribution powered by a software install manager engine called "Portage". Besides functioning as a live DVD, Sabayon Linux can also be installed on a hard disk, acting effectively as an easy-to-use Gentoo installation disk. The live DVD includes a large range of desktop environments and open source software applications, such as KDE, GNOME, XFce, Fluxbox, KOffice, OpenOffice.org, FreeNX, amaroK, Kaffeine, etc.

The guy that owns the place is a buddy of mine. He knows what they are, he just handles so much stuff like that I bet someone gave them to him.
"Linux is not a threat to Windows they are already defeated and their platform infected by viruses!"
I'm a poor college student.
Just paid $700 for a summer course--finishes up my Associate's Degree...
Will look into the recommendation...8^)
Then again, I'm running an iso-based update and not a clean install...
Ahhh, that might be the deal.
I always do a clean install/reformat, save my second partition being the /home directory.
I love doing a full install and having all my settings re-populate on the first boot. :-D
Try that with windows, without 3rd party $oftware.
That's my normal preference--clean install.
But since I have no way of booting a CD (or USB) right now, it's the best I can manage.
Ahhh... :)
Yep, it happens.
The floppy drive looks like a mess (door hanging out, button fell off).
Computer was in fairly rough shape when I got it--it was starting to go...
What kind of computer is it?
One of those cheap emachines...
Don't know about Linux, but I'm sure you can erase the drives and install one of the BSD variants. I have 3-4 boxes running Free- and Open- BSD.
I may go ahead and buy a few more of these Alpha servers. At $50 a pop why not?
"I may go ahead and buy a few more of these Alpha servers. At $50 a pop why not?"
