Don't know about Linux, but I'm sure you can erase the drives and install one of the BSD variants. I have 3-4 boxes running Free- and Open- BSD.

I saw that the "BSD's" run on the Alpha. I may fiddle with that for fun. too. I have not messed with BSD for a few years. We used to use it for NAT/Router services years back before the little blue Linksys boxes showed up and "replaced" BSD for that.

I may go ahead and buy a few more of these Alpha servers. At $50 a pop why not?
