2006 WORLD CUP - Day 14 Thread - U.S. needs win in group E finale

The U.S. national team goes into Thursday's Group E finale against Ghana (9:55 a.m. ET, ESPN) knowing that it must come up with a win to have any chance of moving to the Round of 16.

All four teams in Group E, including the USA, still have a chance to advance. The U.S. must beat a tough Ghana side to have any chance of moving to the knockout phase. Should Bruce Arena's team be able to secure three points against the Africans, whom they meet at 9:55 a.m. ET on ESPN, they will need Italy to beat the Czech Republic in a simultaneous match, which can be seen live on ESPN2. The U.S. is not mathematically eliminated with a Czech draw or win, but will need a big victory over Ghana to avoid being eliminated on goal difference.

Apparently, Srna got the one yellow that everyone, incuding the TV producers, though went to Simic.

No matter, Simic got his second yellow a bit later anyhow.

A waddly adversary.

That Croat Crostralia match was very entertaining! Hard to root for either of them really. But I think the better team just about won.

Confusingly, Simic got sent off first and then Simunic later.

I like what I've seen from the Swiss so far. Very integrated and good team play.
A team with clear unity unlike France. After their first match I said they were a team that didn't like each other.

In the end that could be their undoing.

Hey just saying..... Lots of folks are making fun of him but Ronaldo made things happen today - the jokes are funny, but he's still a factor.

Claudio Reyna announces his retirement from international play.
Sorry that Claudio carries such a terrible memory out.

He was one of our solid overall players on the big stage.

Puffy Ronaldo doesn't need much room other to swing his leg with clear sight of the goal.

A good striker is often his best that way.

That Fat Man could still end up with the Golden Boot. Unless Brazil fails to make the semifinals, which is doubtful, no team will play more games.

Claudio Reyna may not have been the best skilled player on the pitch, but he gave 100 percent effort at each game. He did a great job of representing our country. We have other players (noted here in FR) that have more skill yet seem to walk after 50/50 balls.

He could sit up there and cherry pick a few more goals. He had his head in the right place for that first goal. The second he worked for.

That lumpen hippo scored more goals in the second half than Team USA scored themselves in three matches.

That lumpen hippo TODAY would be the best striker we ever had if he played for us.
