KZLA Wrestles With Chicks" Star Power

The Dixie Chicks’ Natalie Maines “made nice” with an L.A. radio station last week, but it wasn’t the station that’s played new Chicks music almost 225 times. Instead, Maines talked to the Jamie, Jack & Stench morning show at Clear Channel Hot AC KYSR (Star 98.7), which has played new tunes from the Chicks only 38 times.

As you might imagine, this didn’t exactly thrill the folks at Emmis’ crosstown Country outlet, KZLA. What upset KZLA OM/PD R.J. Curtis is that his station has been very supportive of the Chicks. “The really frustrating part is her comment [to the Star morning show] about ‘... no airplay, except for you guys,’” he says. Curtis notes that in addition to airplay, he and his staff have been very vocal in its support of the band. “Peter Tilden has appeared twice on CNN supporting them and I’ve been on Inside Edition twice, in addition to being interviewed by Entertainment Weekly, Rolling Stone and many newspapers, expressing my support for them.

“My staff has been out there on the front line for the Chicks ... and now they feel betrayed. While our research has skewed positive toward playing their music, there has still been a very vocal minority that have continued to call and e-mail asking why we’re playing their music. How can I look [my staff] in the eye and ask them to cheer on the new Chicks’ single?” June 19, 2006

Adding to the insult are Curtis’ repeated requests for an interview — requests that have thus far received no response. “KZLA and several other stations were awarded ‘Exclusive Presents’ for our ongoing support and continued airplay,” he says. “So it’s confusing to us after getting that good news to hear Natalie on Star.

“Any relationship we have with labels and artists should always be mutually beneficial, but the events of last week have reached the point of diminishing returns. To be honest, I’ve pulled their music. If they’re going to go on Star, what’s the point? Why should we keep trying? Why should we keep fighting for them?”

Curtis also notes that he’s been in contact with stations that, like KZLA, have supported the Chicks’ new music. “None of them are pleased about this and they’re very wary,” he says. “They know the same thing could happen to them.” Seeking answers, Curtis recently spoke with Chicks’ manager Simon Renshaw, who did not return R&R’s request for comment. “Simon told me they’re not out to hurt us or screw us but that they really are done with Country because it’s simply too toxic for them in all but about four markets,” Curtis explains. “He wanted me to understand what their world is like right now and why they don’t rely on or even care about getting played on Country radio. He said the brass in New York — that’s where they’re signed, not Nashville — has the opinion that, ‘If Country radio won’t play you, #### ‘em. We’ll get it played somewhere else.’ [Simon] said he respects whatever we do — ‘If you keep playing us, great. If not, we get it. But we still know what you’ve done and appreciate that.’”

Star Crossed Maines’ interview with Jamie, Jack & Stench can be heard in its entirety at http://www.star987.com/pages/ jamie_jack_stench.html?feed=129432&article=517348.

Here’s a sampling: • Country Radio: “I think we feel a little used [in the country market]. They keep saying we’re burning some bridges. But we haven’t done anything to Country radio — so it’s a little confusing. I’m not exactly sure what they expected us to do. But we feel they would never have been happy. Ten phone calls [from unhappy listeners] and [Country radio] would have said it was all too much and they would have stopped playing us. So we didn’t trust them with our future, that’s for sure.”

• New Music: “What [Country radio] did as far as just dropping us in one day because of a few phone calls and a few e-mails and getting so political when they play music is that they freed us up to make an album without thinking of anyone else. The three of us knew they wouldn’t play it. And we didn’t know if it would get played on any other format because we didn’t even know what kind of record we were making. So it really was freeing, in a sense, to not have anyone to please.”

• The Tour: “Concert sales are a bit low, but I’d like to think it’s because people didn’t know we were doing a tour because we were so focused on the new album [in all of our interviews]. No shows have been canceled. We’re just a good news story no matter what is really happening. Our tour didn’t sell out in one day like it did last time, so I guess that’s news. But we’re not canceling shows. We are still getting a feel for where our fans are. We did lose some fans and we gained some others. This is like starting over for us.”

Natalie, you are in denial. People only bought your album out of protest, like you suggested. Those same people wont drop more than $10 bucks a cd for you. In other words you are prostituing your art. You are a $10 dollar trick.

Dont go way mad, just go away!

assclowns.

from today's Boston Globe

http://www.boston.com/news/nation/articles/2006/06/20/furor_over_country_band_echoes_a_nations_cultural_discord/

>>Many other performers were denouncing Bush at the same time, but the milder attack by Natalie Maines (``Just so you know, we're ashamed the president of the United States is from Texas") was felt as the deepest blow because the Dixie Chicks were a country act, and country music is supposed to be conservative.

>>Earlier this month, the conservative National Review struck a humorous blow for unity by naming the top 50 conservative rock songs.

``On first glance rock 'n' roll music isn't very conservative," conceded writer John J. Miller. `` . . . But some rock songs really are conservative and there are more than you might think."

Indeed, some of the songs reflected cherished conservative positions such as the right to bear arms (Aerosmith's ``Janie's Got a Gun") or the importance of military strength (``Rock the Casbah" by The Clash) or small government (The Beatles' ``Taxman"). Others merely reflected conservative attitudes, like Miller's top pick , ``Won't Get Fooled Again" by The Who.

This should go in Ripley's believe it or not....

The Editor at the Commercial Appeal (Memphis, TN) had for his column an appeal for people to support the Dixie Chicks' upcoming Memphis concert. I couldn't believe it -- knew he was a liberal (former editor in Washington state), but to actually use his editorial space for it....!

I think some group of Democrats bought their stuff in bulk to hand out with donations to the DNC at fund raisers.

I do not think the general public gave then success with their new album with all the hate they have generated.
