Nicklaus, Watson question Mickelson decisions

BRUDENELL, Prince Edward Island (AP) -- Far from Winged Foot and the U.S. Open, Jack Nicklaus and Tom Watson wondered what in the world was going on with Phil Mickelson.

"Mickelson was two up with two holes to go?" Watson asked. "He bogeyed No. 17 and double-bogeyed No. 18?"

After arriving in Prince Edward Island following a visit to remote salmon fishing camp on New Brunswick's Restigouche River, Watson and Nicklaus were mostly in the dark about Mickelson's collapse and Geoff Ogilvy's victory in New York on Sunday.

The two golf greats, speaking before a charity golf event at Rodd Brudenell River Resort, were at first hesitant to criticize Mickelson and Colin Montgomerie, who also had a chance to win on the 18th hole.

But both were soon expressing surprise at the shot selections after hearing what happened. Mickelson hit only two fairways all day but still pulled a driver on the 18th tee. He promptly sliced his ball off the roof of a hospitality tent and into the Open's notoriously tough rough.

The two were even more amazed that Mickelson made matters worse by trying for the green on his second shot rather than getting the ball back on the fairway. Mickelson ended up hitting a tree and advancing the ball only 25 yards.

"He had an easy option to get back into play? Really?" Watson asked.

"Put the ball in play. Go play golf," Nicklaus added.

On his third shot, Mickelson hit a towering iron that sailed left of the green and came down with such force that it plugged in the bunker.

Nicklaus, who won a record 18 majors and 83 tour titles, said he learned early in his career to not take undue risks when a tournament is on the line.

"You don't ever give up the end of a golf tournament," he said, adding he learned that lesson in 1963 when he picked the wrong club on the last two holes of an event he was leading and finished bogey-bogey and lost. I didn't like that feeling and said I'd never do that again, and I never did."

Watson won eight majors, including five British Opens. He acknowledged it's easy to second guess but said: "What are you playing for? You're playing to win, not be a hero. The only person you have to beat is yourself -- and he beat himself. It sounds like he beat himself because he didn't play the percentage shot."

Nicklaus and Watson are to play in the Legends of Golf, an event designed to raise money for the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada and promote golf in the province.

The 66-year-old Nicklaus said Monday's round marked only the 11th time he has swung a club since ending his tour career at last summer's British Open. When asked if he has any plans to play another tour event, he shook his head.

"Maybe if I get a new body," he said. "I've lost three inches of height. My vertebrae sit one on top of the other, so I just can't move. I have no ability to turn or do anything else."

Pressure and fatigue can turn any golfer into a weekend hacker. Phil is far from the first to feel its sting, and won't be the last.

Gee. It's not like he was playing something important. Like football.

I was never really sure why I never got on the Mickelson bandwagon. But now I think I know. It's the arrogance, and general disrespect for the game that he shows with his cocky swagger and his disregard for the course he is playing. I was there Friday and the only hole I saw him play was the 18th. He did virtually the same thing Friday afternoon: hit behind a tree, arrogantly tried to go over; and the tree told him no. You would think he might have learned, but no. He really had no business finishing tied for second. How many times did he avoid the real rough because his ball was stopped by the gallery? Then he (supposedly) puts his ball in a trash bag. Did he really find the ball himself, of did the gallery bail him out again? And then when the gallery couldn't save him, he bounced one off one of the temporary hospitality structures. Why these buildings aren't out of bounds is really hard to fathom. I guess they are so far removed from the fairways that no one ever thought it would be an issue. I'd add three strokes to Mickelson's score for the final two holes alone. I'm glad he didn't turn out to be the official winner.

Mickelson's problem all day was his reluctance to damage the fairways with a divot, so he chose to play from the rough, and cartpaths, and over by the port-a-potties.

The real trajedy of the day was Montgomerie. He had a perfect drive on 18 and all he had to do was make par and he would have won. Very sad.

On January 20, 2004, Mickelson, one of the leading golfers of his generation, announced that for every birdie and eagle he scores this season on tour, the Phil and Amy Mickelson Charitable Fund will contribute $100 per birdie and $500 per eagle to the Special Operations Warrior Foundation (SOWF) under the “Birdies for the Brave” program.

Source.

Before everybody climbs on the "bash Mickelson" bandwagon, consider that he is in his third year of support for providing college educations to the children of Special Ops forces killed in the line of duty.

He made some mistakes yesterday, to be sure. But, he was in the hunt all weekend. Keep in mind that his prime competitor, Tiger Woods, was watching the event on television, having failed to make the cut at a +12 on Friday.

contribute $100 per birdie

Wow! That's sot of like me saying I will contribute seven cents per Post here at FR to some scholarship program and making a big deal about it. He had ten birdies this week, That's a grand. Maybe he makes other contributions too. I don't know, but the one you describe here sounds like something some PR person at Ford thought up.

Tiger was his usual classy self, though he departed early. He'll be back, as will Mr. Goosen who had an even worse score.

Yeah, it was sad to watch him self-destruct that way. But I hope he learns from it as a cautionary tale. There's no need to "ride a white stallion into the clubhouse" (as the commentators put it) when you can play it safe and still win.
