Yellowstone Tourist Dies in 500-Foot Fall

ASSOCIATED PRESS

YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK, Wyo. (AP) - A woman lost her footing after stepping over a retaining wall to take a photograph and went over a cliff, falling 500 feet to her death in a canyon, park officials said.

The 52-year-old woman was visiting the park with her husband and two children.

Her husband flagged down a passing motorist, who called 911 after the Saturday morning accident at an overlook along the Yellowstone River, park officials said.

A ranger rappelled down the canyon wall to reach the woman, but she was dead at the scene.

In Michigan, The Grand Rapids Press on Sunday identified the woman as Deb Chamberlin, 52, of Rockford, vice president of the school board in the west Michigan community.

"It's hard for me to articulate right now because I'm still in shock," said Rockford Superintendent Mike Shibler, who said he spoke to Chamberlin's husband, Gary.

It was the second fatal accident in Yellowstone this year. In February, a woman was killed in a snowmobile accident.

She's 52. She came of age during the sixties.

The railing was put up there by "the man" and it's instinct to go against perceived authority. Never mind the reason.

Laws don't, um, didn't apply to her: the Government's, God's, Newton's...

Thank you Faith for your post #7. That's how long it took for a compassionate response to a woman's death. I always wonder about the depth of those who mock .

Condolences to her family.

Thanks for the prayers. Can't believe some of the comments on this thread.

So much for FR being a loving, humble Christian site in addition to it being conservative.

F'ing hypocrites.

...flows are 300 cubic feet per second, or 2,400 gallons per second.

Who wrote that??? Three hundred cubic feet is a volume of water equal to that of a cube 6.69 feet on each side. Way, WAY more water than that goes over the falls each second!

Journalism schools. What a bunch of retards.

I witnessed a group of people go tearing off across a meadow in Yellowstone toward a bull moose. They all had cameras in hand. He stood and watched them for a minute or two and then headed straight for them. It was a footrace back to their cars.

My dad did the same thing when I was a kid and he was trying to get a picture of a buffalo.

Did she at least get the pic while on the way down?

That's harsh! (but a good question). I guess thats why they call it a "retaining wall" and not a "climb over me and take a picture wall".

Prayers too...I do feel bad for the family...I have more idea than some what it can mean for a family to lose a mother by accident, since I saw what it did to my stepsons.

That family has rough times ahead, with a lot of internalized grief and maybe guilt, too.

Expecially since she sounds like one of us- a Christian woman serving on the school board.

Sounds like she was doing exactly what we hope all conservatives to do.

How sad for her family. Sometimes bad judgment is fatal. My cousin died in a tractor accident, left a wife and two preschool children, doing something he knew he shouldn't have done.

Maybe LOTS of guilt. Can you imagine the last words to your mom being "Hey mom, get a picture of this!"

Yeah, it is pretty harsh.

And I agree, that probably is a good indication as to why it is called a 'retaining wall'.

Who knows, if she did get a good pic, it may win her a posthumus award.
