OK gang. Time to put the old iconoclastic part of the old thinker to work.
Yeah, I have enjoyed Ann's acidic barbs and laughed out loud at some of her more outrageous pronouncements over the years - though frankly, her act is getting a bit old with me - but that is not what this vanity is about.
I suspect that we are all secretly aware that her public persona displays more than a little evidence of exhibitionism and narcissism....the woman clearly has some personality issues. I personally think that she likely has a low sense of self-worth, which her public persona would appear to compensate for....
I would like to hear opinions on this topic from any FReepers who are psychologists or psychiatrists.
Oh, and in case some of you didn't get it, I'll repeat myself:
THIS VANITY HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH MS. COULTER'S POLITICAL VIEWS. It is meant to provoke some thought about her method of promoting them (and herself).
I suspect that few Freepers would want their daughters to behave as Ms. Coulter does - both in terms of her outrageous rudeness and her never-married lifestyle.
Lord how I miss Texas!!!!
So if your daughter publicly wished that someone put rat poison into a Supreme Court Justice's coffee that would be OK with you?
Still at it? Have you seen how Barack Obama responds to the camera?
He isn't trying to sell books, He wants to be president. On behalf of the most extreme and dangeours strain of liberalism to be found outside of Havana and Caracas, he wants to own and shape this nation's soul to his liking.
I know which psychological profile matters to the long-term health of this nation, and it isn't that of a political commentator such as Ann Coulter.
This isn't a trial and you, sir, are no prosecutor, but to ally your fears about how I raised my children let me answer you this way.
My girls, all 3 of them, were raised to speak their minds about any subject, especially on political motives and are fiercely American. The oldest ones question and comment in a polite and direct fashion, but not letting any politician or public figure get away with any back-handed defelction of the issue. They have done this in front of committees from both sides of the state government. They have done this admirably well in their fairly young ages of 27 and 26. What the girls do with their PRIVATE life is none of my business, no matter if I agree or disagree with it, as Ann's private life is NONE of your business.
Ummmm...I assume you are not saying that you have never seen her on TV, so maybe we're talkiing about different people? ;>)
Annie is a big girl. Don't try to tell her how to dress.
I am sure she knows full well the implications of a skimpy dress.
Some women use their bodies as weapons. Get it?
You use 'behaving' like it is a dirty word.
I have seen NO behavior negatives in Ann, and thus have no reason to say to my daughter you are NOT to behave like Ann.
However, my daughter is much, much, younger and would need the education Ann has to have the ability to state things as they are. So there would be requirements not yet attained by my daughter in order to behave like Ann.
Now since it appears to be the Godless and Evolution that really has your panties in a wad over Ann and her supposed behavior you are NOT being honest. Your attempt to smear Ann over what you seem to think about her "sleeping around" is a baseless accusation cause you do not have a clue if she has or does "sleep" around.
So again it seems you are the one in need of a psychological profile!!!
You're a joke, Al Simmons. You're a joke in that you cannot distinguish between a genuine threat and pointed political humor.
Only, there is no punch line to your joke. Unlike Ann Coulter, you are unfunny, confused, and unfocused.
DU is filled with unfunny jokes such as yours. Why don't you post your thread over there where it belongs?
New tag line.
Thx!
Correct about point one; Incorrect about point two. There are still a couple of dudes rotting in Ft. Leavenworth who wish that you were right! ;>)
Nice try to again dodge the issue, but the question I raise has nothing at all to do with speaking one's mind and EVERYTHING to do with HOW one goes about doing it.
Ann's private life is none of my business, but my daughters' sure better be if I love them (I have 3 of them too) I sure am not going to hold my tongue if I think they are doing something wrong just because I'm afraid they'll get mad at me....
Why all the psycho analysis here?
Ann decides what she writes and says. She's a big girl that can take care of herself.
Give her a break!
JC, you have apparently been surfing DU wayyyyy too much! Your resort to ad hominem, as well as desperate attempt to avoid answering a simple question are the very foundational hallmarks of liberal argument!
I don't know how Ann acts when she's not on stage. If we could assume a decent church-going and chaste life, (not every unmarried woman sleeps around -- the Liberals haven't won on that one yet) I'd be proud of my daughter for living like that - prouder if she was like Phyllis Schafly. PLUS Catholic, of course.
For decades, may on the right have allowed the left to dominate the cocnversation by appealng to our sense of decency and courtesy. Slamming, say, catholics or Christians generally was considered okay, but disagreeing abougt abortion with a woman who'd had one was considered boorish, so the baby-killer won the debate.
Ann has shown clearly that when you take that way form the left, they have very little left. She's a warrior.
Because Ann happens to have similar beliefs to yours, and is very effective at communicating them, you refuse to apply to her the same standard that you would apply to your own daughter in a heartbeat - "be polite, don't wish ill on others".
(C'mon people - internal consistency is one thing that is supposed to diffrentiate us from liberals)
Or am I totally wrong about what you teach your own daughter?
it seems to me, your nose is out of joint over her Darwinism statements more than the rest of her "persona". if she were a proponent of YOUR point of view in that regard, perhaps you wouldn't have the opinion of her that you now do? i haven't read her book yet, but i will. And, by the way, my 17 year old daughter who is very meek and mild and would never carry on like ann does, gets a HUGE kick out of ann, and thinks she is GREAT! maybe bc my daughter doesn't have the personality to carry that off, she appreciates that someone else does and is able to speak for her.
I believe her parents deserve the Presidential Medal of Freedom for giving us her voice.
Ha...well, I am a reactionary, chauvinistic, right-wing southerner, so what can you expect?
I saw Coulter in person several years ago (and less famous), when she was speaking to a small group of us fiery young conservatives.
A few of us who were outside smoking greeted her as she arrived. She was polite, shy, and a little embarrassed by our attention (maybe that had to do with the particular kind of attention young men tend to give). But when she got behind the podium she became "Ann Coulter!"
Some people can turn that kind of persona on and off like a switch, and she's figured out what plays in todays market.
I, on the other hand, flip a switch clearly marked "Autism Mode" everytime I'm tricked into standing behind a podium.
OK
But my question is a simple, non-political one - would you want your daughter to act like Ann does IN PUBLIC?
I certainly think Ann is unique.
I would rather see more like Ann, than those who don't think at all.
Case in point... I will never forget a few years back when Hillary was selling her book. They asked one woman why she's buying the book? She looked at the camera and said, "I don't care if she murdered someone. I love her, and I am going to buy her book."
That was stunning to me.
Ann at least studies what is going on in the political landscape, and comments on it in a way that astounds people.
Considering that her books are top sellers, she's hit a nerve with the American public.
Would I want my daughters saying some of those things? Probably not, but I appreciate how she has helped change the political landscape.
Thanks for your honest answer (though given grudgingly)..
