The U.S. national team faces a must-win situation Saturday against Italy (2:30 p.m. ET, ABC). The U.S. lineup could see some changes, including adding Eddie Johnson. Czech Republic and Ghana play earlier in the day (11:30 a.m., ABC), while Portugal advanced by beating Iran 2-0.

I agree with you. If I had to bet on one team it would be the hosts or at best another Euro team. A team off the continent would be going against the trends of World Cups in general.
You must have removed me from the ping list, could you put me back on please?
I heard about that. The Italian team isn't exactly shaking in their boots, are they. :) Wouldn't it be sweeeeet if they got the surprise of their lives.
But don´t forget Argentina and Brasil. I´m curious how they´re performing their next game. On my A list are Spain, Argentina, (Brasil,) Germany and Italy. On my B list are the Czechs, England, (France,) Netherlands.
Having lived in Europe for years, Im having a lot of fun educating my wife on some of the traditions. The exchange of Jerseys after a match is an example of the sportsmanship found at the World Cup. Im torn today, though. I lived in Italy for three years in the 70's and I knew more about Italian soccer than I did about American football. No sport is better than the other, and I am no less American for liking soccer as much as I do. Having said that, Forza Italia! The US kicks ass in everything else in the world, so my conscience is clear in pulling hard for Italia today!
Michael, your German team looks tough to beat as well..
Of course not. As far as I know only European and South American teams have ever won the World Cup. The trend I note is that when the cup is in Europe a European team wins. When its in South America one of theirs wins. When neither its up for grabs like last time in Japan/Korea. I am sure there are exceptions but it is something I have noted.
United States goalkeeper Kasey Keller takes a break as teammates warm up behind him during training at the World Cup stadium in Kaiserslautern, Germany Friday, June 16, 2006.
1958 Brazil winning in Sweden is the only time it has not happened.
If Ghana wins it is good for us as long of course as we at least have a draw with Italy.
Ok thanks. It would be nice to see a non Euro/South American taam win it all one day. Not sure when that will happen though.
Ghana is doing very well. Just a note to remind all of us to watch the game. :-)
All statistics can be proven wrong. :) Whenever Iran participated in a World Cup, the host won. But who says it´s the same this year? The game lasts 90 minutes, and Germany wins at the end. :-)
This is one hell of a match so far -- GREAT attacking soccer!!
Is Paraguay out?
I was cheering for them.
Yep, Paraguy is out. ENG-PAR 1:0, SWE-PAR 1:0. They´ve no chance to get through, but Trinidad & Tobago has a theoretical chance against Sweden. Englad has reached the next round from group B.
Oh curses!
The problem is that Ghana is not going to be a pushover either. The US got the worst possible draw out of the entire 32 team field.
