Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger was injured in a motorcycle accident on Monday morning.
The Steelers confirmed the accident for Channel 4 Action News.
The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review said the accident happened on Second Avenue near the 10th Street Bridge.
A witness told Channel 4 Action News that Roethlisberger went over the handlebars, hit the windshield of another vehicle and then hit the ground.
Roethlisberger was not wearing a helmet, according to the paper.

Words to literally live by.
Anybody who rides without a helmet should have their head examined...
Thank you--They don't mention his knees....
Don't know about football contracts, but riding a motorcycle will void an NBA contract. Jeez, what a stupid way to risk a career. Wait until retirement, you'll be older and wiser.
The woman who did a left turn in front of him is toast. It will be worse that the guy who interfered with the foul ball and cost the Cubbies.
After his coach and Terry Bradshaw warned him about it. Dumbass....
Sounds like Steelers fans should count Ben out for this season. Hell, it's already June, the hitting starts in less than 2 months. You think he's gonna be allowed ANY contact to his head in the coming months?
No way.
I've heard reports that the knee injuries were just surface wounds--no structural damage. But at this point it's hard to say. He was in surgery for an awfully long while and we'll know better after a few days. But on the whole it seems like he'll be okay and that the wounds are not career threatening.
Fortunately, it looks like Ben was not injured too badly considering that he was thrown off his bike. Get well soon Ben.
Sorry but Cycles are unsafe period when riding in and around cars at speed.
If you don't believe me then I have a small experiment that should prove such.
Sit on your bike and have a car traveling just ten miles an hour hit you broadside. Chances are you will have severe injuries, maybe even loose a limb by having it crushed.
Now sit in your car and have a similar vehicle hit you at ten miles per hour broadside. Chances are if you have your seat belt on worst is gonna happen is maybe some whiplash or banging your head against the side window and get a concussion. You could still get hurt bad in such a wreck in a car but if I knew I HAD to have such an accident And I got to choose whether I was in a car or on a cycle I know which line I would be in.
Wrecking on a bike (running into another vehicle or stationary object) at highway speeds even with a helmet on most likely will mean permanent injury if you are real damn lucky and if you are not, death and/or dismemberment. In a vehicle with airbags and seat belts you have a much better chance of surviving and may even avoid serious injury all together.
Although now some websites are raising the valid point that if his jaw is wired shut to allow it to mend, he will be placed on a liquid diet, which would case significant weight loss--not a good thing for athletes. Even if Ben's knees are fine, there is the chance that his facial and jaw fractures could sideline him for at least part of the season.
right
I agree that people should get to decide for themselves whether to wear helmets, seatbelts, etc. I also agree that car drivers need better education about sharing the road with bikers, bicyclists, etc.
However, in most cases I don't think this is about biker persecution. I ride a bicycle on roads and city streets, and I experience the same problems -- drivers pulling out into my path or running me off the road, parked drivers opening their doors as I'm passing them, etc. I honestly think most drivers just don't pay attention, and don't even see other cars much less smaller vehicles such as motercycles and bicycles.
PS: I'm on the thread not because of motorcycles, but because I'm a Steelers fan.
The traffic signals may not have mattered. For whatever reason, there is an incorrect belief prevalent around here that people turning left across traffic have the right of way. The driver may have been engaging in a standard "Pittsburgh turn." I always pause before moving forward through an intersection, even when I have right of way, because Pittsburgh turns are so common. (Of course, this just encourages them...sigh.)
It could have been a lot worse.
He spent several hours in surgery, it's almost a given it will take several months to make a complete recovery ... he won't be playing football this season.
I go to PGH now a few times a year. What is a PGH turn?
He is now...
No kidding.
By the way, this is the kind of thing (when someone dodges a nearly certain bullet) that can happen to a relatively young man that can make him very thankful and similarly ......... very wise very quickly.
I hope it wisens up this particular kid.
I think it will.
But, he won't be doing any Chunky Soup commercials any time soon.
It just goes to show that you can be the most careful driver in the world but that doesn't guarantee something like this won't happen.
