Eagle Feather Ceremony Planned (for H.S. grads, Oregon school district)

The Lincoln County School District's Indian Education Program is honoring graduating Indian seniors with an eagle feather at 6:30 p.m. Monday, June 12 at the Siletz Tribal Community Center on Government Hill in Siletz.

The feathers are obtained legally from the U.S. Department of Wildlife, through the Siletz Tribal representative, Mike Darcy. Only students registered with the Indian Education Program (now Title VII) and graduating from a Lincoln County school are eligible to receive an eagle feather.

The public is invited to the ceremony, no tickets or reservations are necessary.

It's great if an American Indian community wants to honor their own graduating seniors with an Eagle Ceremony, a feather, or any other cultural tradition. Or is this a religious ceremony, based on native beliefs? Is this a church and state issue? What about a government program to honor Jewish grads with a Star of David pin, or pagan grads with the pentacle? But what I really object to is, this is not a communtiy honoring it's own, it which case all the above questions would be irrelevant. It's a government entity, the School District, using tax dollars.

And what about the Eagles? Where'd they get all those feathers? How do the the Eagles, PETA and the EPA feel about this?

Maybe they could use Turkey feathers.

Oh dear, I hope this doesn't start a local PETA protest. Also, how "Indian" does one have to be to "register in the Indian Education Program"? Full-blood, half, one-quarter, one eighth, grandchild of an honorary member of the Cherokees, or what?

Sort of comical too that the Representative is named "Mike Darcy".

My scant knowledge pertains to the tribes of Minnesota, but if I'm not mistaken, bestowing an eagle feather is the equivilant of our Congressional Medal of Honor. The highest honor that can be given by your people.

Graduating high scool hardly merits such an honor.

(sarcasm on)

Yeah! Eagles have feelings too!

How dare those animal-oppressing, evil Indians DARE pluck a feather out of an eagle?

Maybe a eagle fledging ceremony should be held with the newly fledged eagle chicks getting a severed Indian finger should be held instead?

(sarcasm off)

:-)

The Lincoln County School District's Indian Education Program.( From the article)

Is this a church and state issue? What about a government program to honor Jewish grads with a Star of David pin, or pagan grads with the pentacle? But what I really object to is, this is not a communtiy honoring it's own, it which case all the above questions would be irrelevant. ( from baa39) baa39,

Government schools never were and never will be politically, culturally, or religiously neutral. This eagle feather incident is merely one among thousands of examples.

It is impossible for this school to give equal respect to every culture in the school. IMPOSSIBLE. The school WILL favor some with their cultural and religious beliefs and ignore or actively undermine the cultural and religious beliefs of others.

Many of the children have no alternative but to attend the government school. The price-fixed monopoly has driven out competition and the heavy school tax burden sucks up the family money that could be used for private school. If these children REFUSE to go to their government assigned indoctrination camp they face court, social worker, and armed police action.

It's a government entity, the School District, using tax dollars.

If that taxpayer refuses to pay for this government promotion of a favored culture and religion, that citizen will have his home and or business sold at sheriff's auction.

Real bullets in those guns on the hip. That is what government compulsion means! Government schools are a violation of freedom of conscience, a violation of state and federal constitutions, and a complete abomination!
