Who needs a guard dog when Jack the elderly suburban housecat is on duty?
The 10-year-old New Jersey tabby defended his neighbourhood turf earlier this week by chasing a wandering black bear up a tree twice.

West Milford residents Suzanne and Jack Giovanetti first noticed a bear huddled in a tree in their backyard on Sunday afternoon.
Sitting beneath the tree: A seven-kilogram, orange-and-white, declawed neighbourhood cat named Jack.
The bear remained in the tree for about 15 minutes, frequently looking down at Jack.
When it slid down the tree and ran off, Jack was hot on its heels
Cat is 'territorial'
Suzanne Giovanetti told the Star-Ledger of Newark that the cat was hissing at the bear as it gave chase.
The bear climbed up into a second tree until Jack's owner, Donna Dickey, called the cat home.

The cat sauntered back toward the group, rubbing up against everyone," said the newspaper.
As soon as the cat left, the bear clambered down the tree and walked into the woods.
Dickey told the newspaper that Jack is territorial, frequently chasing small animals from their yard. She believes the cat may have mistook the bear for the family's chocolate labrador retriever.
Giovanetti, who said she's never bonded with the neighbourhood cat, said she was always a little afraid of Jack.
"Now, I think I fear him more," she is quoted as saying.

Is this your cat?
"What's that thing jiggling from that big furry person around 2 feet above the ground... I think I'll pounce..." If bear was upwind from cat, bear would not know until the strike.
OOOOWWWWWEEEEE!!!
Reminds me of the time some relatives visited with their German Shepard. It came accross our 10 LB black Bombay cat Ginger in the back yard. The cat puffed up, then chased the Shepard to the end of the yard. Unfortunately for Ginger, the dog out of room to run at the fence, and had to turn to fight, at which point it chased our cat all the way back across the yard and over the fence, leaving everyone laughing hysterically.
They all can and many do.
Look at the cat in the pictures, this one isn't even puffed. He's got his fur all slicked down and the bear is acting like the cat is about to deal the Bite of Death.
One of the VK Drill Sargents....
The bear's a wuss.
I'd like to take a cat like that with me next time I go hiking.
Almost any cat will do.
You remember this bruiser?
Just like my kitten Stormy Nicole. She kicked the @$$ of my grandparents german shepard. She was less then 3 months old, I go outside and saw my cat going medieval on a dog, I couldn't stop laughing.
That is a bold kitty.
