the company sometimes discovers that a copy of Windows that it thought was legitimate is actually pirated.
And vice-versa I've noticed.

Might also look into Microsoft (or is it INTEL) BITS technology.
Supposed to 'sense' when you are not using your Internet connection, and using that opportunity to 'automatically' call home and download / install things without you knowing it.
There is no 'off' switch, unless you manually disable the service.
Sony already uses it to 'pre-load' games that is sells and distributes online.

Is anyone at all suprised by this? Of course Apple sues and put all clone makers out of buiness. Is there some point being made here about Microsoft's right not to provide online updates to users of stolen software?

The company said the undisclosed daily check is a safety measure designed to allow the tool, called Windows Genuine Advantage, to quickly shut down in case of a malfunction. For example, if the company suddenly started seeing a rash of reports that Windows copies were pirated, it might want to shut down the program to make sure it wasn't delivering false results.Did the spokesman just think this one up while he was at the podium or what? Talk about lame. Since the tool supposedly doesn't do anything to interfere with Windows operation if it thinks the copy is pirate, why would it need an emergency shutdown? I smell manure.
