Might also look into Microsoft (or is it INTEL) BITS technology.

Supposed to 'sense' when you are not using your Internet connection, and using that opportunity to 'automatically' call home and download / install things without you knowing it.

There is no 'off' switch, unless you manually disable the service.

Sony already uses it to 'pre-load' games that is sells and distributes online.
