Boaters, swimmers reporting swan attacks

Swans may look peaceful and elegant, but in some northeast Indiana lakes, they've got a bad attitude.

The Indiana Department of Natural Resources says there have been several confrontations between swans and people since Memorial Day.

In one attack, a 13-year-old girl was swimming in the Lake James area when a mute swan pulled her under the water for several seconds until her father diverted the bird's attention.

The mute swans can weigh about 30 pounds and have a wingspan of up to eight feet.

D-N-R spokesman Rodney Clear says he's not sure what's prompting the attacks, though nesting season may make the birds more aggressive.

Wildlife officials hold a public meeting tonight at the North Webster Community Center.

"The mute swans can weigh about 30 pounds"

Yes, large waterfowl can be aggressive. When I was at the zoo one day I saw a trumpeter swan beat the crap out of a mallard that got too close. And that was just pique, since it didn't have any young around. Add in goslings or cygnets and they get pretty cranky.

he found other things to do, and let me alone after that.

Bake at 325 for 3 hours. Serve with glazed carrots and a dry Fume Blanc.
