Boaters, swimmers reporting swan attacks

Swans may look peaceful and elegant, but in some northeast Indiana lakes, they've got a bad attitude.

The Indiana Department of Natural Resources says there have been several confrontations between swans and people since Memorial Day.

In one attack, a 13-year-old girl was swimming in the Lake James area when a mute swan pulled her under the water for several seconds until her father diverted the bird's attention.

The mute swans can weigh about 30 pounds and have a wingspan of up to eight feet.

D-N-R spokesman Rodney Clear says he's not sure what's prompting the attacks, though nesting season may make the birds more aggressive.

Wildlife officials hold a public meeting tonight at the North Webster Community Center.

Swans are mean. Ive seen them attack people on wave runners, tubes, etc. Cant say I blame them for attacking the wave runners :)

I'm putting my tinfoil on, LOL, so here goes:

What is it with animals that live in and around water, and electromagnetic anomalies? This go 'round, it looks like alligators and swans. Back during Solar Max in 2001, it was sharks. I've seen research that indicates Solar Max influences human beings as well, with some "revolutionaries" going so far as having suggested timing their revolutions to coincide with the 11 year, cyclical peak. We're just about at the midpoint of this cycle now, but the anomalies remain, as do the effects, it's beginning to seem.

Nutty? Maybe. Time will tell.

Yup. In a local pond, a resident pair of swans coexisted with many geese until they had cygnets. With that, the cob would tolerate no geese on the pond.

Or near the pond:

Swans can fly. Why would they need to use a wave runner?

I agree with the assessment of wave runners....that sound is so annoying and have thought about the evil I could do to them, but on the other hand I do understand the fun people have on them.

when going up rivers or in "no wake zones" the wave runners can barely go above idle speed, making them perfect targets for swans. Why the swans dislike them is anyone guess, but they are mean birds. My son was floating on a tube behind our boat when he was attacked by a swan. The kid nearly walked on water.

We use to have geese that would try to attack. You had to be pretty fast then grab them by the neck and avoid the wings and feet. They would usually go off really pissed off honking at you, lettin gyou kow that "you got off easy" If they keep coming, then grab and twist. Roast goose. I imagine you could do that with a swan but I am sure that they are considered a protected species.
