Instead of banning the Confederate Battle Flag , and it's uses in modern fashion , at places like Ithaca High School , they should require ALL the students to watch the program being shown by The History Channel " 80 Acres of Hell" .
This is about the Union prison Camp Douglas and what went on there in the name of the glorious Union...

It was Black people that rounded up other black people and sent them into slavery. It still happens today. That is true, but it doesn't change the fact that the Confederacy was built on the wicked institution of slavery and the best thing that could have happened to America was the destruction of the CSA.
If Blacks in America are still so scarred over slavery then why do they take muslim names, the religion of "fellow blacks" that sold them and yet bristle at a Confederate flag?
Why should any Confederate lover complain about blacks being scarred over slavery when so many reb fans seem scarred that the Union defeated and disgraced the rebellion 140+ years ago?
You sound like you're condemning all black people for the errors of a few. That's like some black guy imputing the KKK mindset to all white people.

S. Hurlburt in 1866 and learn about the reign of terror instituted by Confederate thug officials against the Union people of that area in the name of the glorious freedom loving slave owners.

The slave owners confused their narrow interests with the interests of the "South". So what if the slaveoners had a minority representation-they were a minority.
And about Nat Turner's rebellion-what did they expect? They themselves would rebel in 1860 because they didn't like the results of an election. The spoiled Dixie elite never could find it in their hearts to be generous and hold others to the low standards they maintained for themselves.

Good article. Thanks for posting.

Aloha, and howdy, howdy, howdy. Anyway, yeah. It would at least be much more constructive and informative. Give the kids something to consider. I haven't seen this particular show, but we hear popular culture flappin' their jaws about the sins of, Andersonville, and when it comes time to present the Union atrocities it's just given a glossing over with, "Oh, war is hell, don't ya know. Both sides did bad things." Yeah, but the Union did far worse. But they don't ever utter those facts because that would pop the horrendously fat bubble of the North's continuing control over the South...

And you sound like you're excusing the "victim" mentality that traps many Blacks in poverty.

"Are you suggesting some fiction that southern prison camps were better run or more humane than northern ones?"
No sir , all were surely hell holes , as none were prepared for what happened , and yet this fact remains : due to conditions in the South ,even the guards had very little food to eat , about on a par with the prisoners they were charged with to oversee. Yet in the north ,and at Camp Douglas in particular , the Yankee's intentionally withheld food and medical services from the prisoners out of shear vindictive
spite . They staff and guards at these prisons had plenty to eat and they went further even to stop the concerned (northern) citizens from aiding in any way the incarcerate
southerners. It was a vast war crime , with clear intent ,
and fully covered up by the history ,written by the 'victors' ever since. They hung Col. Wirtz of Andersonville
but they promoted Col Sweet of Camp Douglas to General.
Sweet had tortured , and summarily executed those under his charge , especially any Negros that came in with the CSA gents. See the program sir....

And you sound like you're excusing the "victim" mentality that traps many Blacks in poverty. I don't see how somebody would think I'm excusing anything just because I object to the broad brush. There's whining victims among all groups, but it seems that some people are a lot more sensitive when it's the other group's failing and a lot more forgiving when the "victims" are their own color. I've got no use for whining blacks just as much as I've got no use for whining whites. But my problem is with the whining, not what the color the whiner is.
By the way, the greatest whining victims in American history were the crybaby slaveowners who thought the whole nation should be subordinated to their desire to own other men.

or the should be taken on a field trip to Point Lookout DEATH CAMP, the DAMNyankee hellhole in southern MD, where at least 15,000 helpless CSA POWs were slaughtered like cattle, just because it was cheaper to kill them than to feed/clothe them.

the DIFFERENCE in Andersonville & the DAMNyankee HELLholes like Elmira, Camp Douglas & Point Lookout is that at the DAMNyankee camps the CRUELTY, intentional starvation of, the denial of clothing/shelter/medical care to and the TENS of THOUSANDS of MURDERS of the CSA POWs was PLANNED as a PREMEDITATED ACT.
at Andersonville the privation/death/disease was caused by NOTHING to give to the Union POWS (numerous GUARDS died of starvation & exposure at Camp Sumter). lincoln, the TYRANT, twice refused an offer to repatriate the Union POWs to "friendly lines".
in both cases, it was a matter of INTENT.

if they knew what was awaiting them , I think not a man in the CSA would have ever surrendered. Half the time it was their officers without the guts to keep in the fight anyway. If only they knew , they would have fought on to the man . Should have . No surrenders!
Former General Robert E. Lee is quoted as saying (in private)
at a gathering in 1870 " If I had foreseen the use 'those people' designed to make of their victory ,there would have been no surrender at Appomattox Courthouse! No sir , not by me! Had I foreseen these results of subjugation ,I would have preferred to die at Appomattox ,with my brave men , my sword in this right hand"
Even today , even here , the perfidy goes on.

What a surprise to see my article on here! I was so happy to read all the comments posted here from so many Southerners. It's great to be reminded that there are normal (i.e. conservative!) people out there in the world--being up in Itahca I sometimes forget that we are the MAJORITY! Thanks for reading, y'all!

Oh yeah, you're right, they seceded so the "whole nation" had to be slave owners. I'm done with you on this subject. As a Jew I've dealt with slavery a long time. You don't see Jews whining and failing because some ancestor was a slave.

Well, it's good to know and I believe that rather easily. Especially after reading that one of his own Generals had a plan to end the war, quickly, and Lincoln would not hear of it. He told McClellan, "I want to bring the South to its knees". He fell right off the pedestal with a loud thud, and stopped being my friend at that point...

Welcome to FR vdd2 - excellent article. Thanks for writing in - you have the support of many conservatives 'round here. Best of luck in your studies my friend.

" It is why black Southerners will proudly call themselves Southern and will fly the Confederate flag. The South is, above all, a cultural entity."
Mr. H.K.Edgerton is the perfect living example of this
modern day honorable pride .
