My 12yo neice is graduating from grammar school on Friday, and I want to give her a good book to read for the summer.
Does anybody have any ideas? I was thinking one of the classics like Jane Eyre or something but maybe thats too old for her at this time. Also, I want to avoid giving her something Lib/PC. Any suggestions greatly appreciated.
She would probably love a boxed set of all seven Chronicles of Narnia...

...and, if she's reading at grade level or above, she's about right for "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn".

"Where The Red Fern Grows" is a book no child should miss reading. Get it in hardcover because she'll wear it out.

A really fun and morally instructional read is "By The Great Horn Spoon".

Oh, yes, and absolutely do not pass up "Hans Brinker, or the silver Skates".

...I'll keep my thinker running and, if I come up with more, Ill post them.
Well done!
Perhaps you should do a whole NT for such an audience?
I loved the Narnia series when I was that age, still do infact.
Something from Jane Austen.
Anne of Green Gables perhaps?
May be a little too young? Not sure, and it's certainly not a literary gem...LOL But nancy Drew and the spinoffs from that series for fluff reading.
Ah, concur!
I loved the "Adventures of Huckleberry Finn" and "Tom Sawyer" at that age.
I'm not religious, but agree that the Bible is a good choice.
But as to fiction, how about "All Quiet On The Western Front?" by Remarque? I think that could very well help prepare kids for hard times. Reading it woke me up when I was about 14.
Oh, thanks for the ping!
I think a lot of those classics are worth the time. But it really depends on the specific kid's interests and reading level.
Good point.
Religious or not, I tend to appreciate your insights and like your personality.
Thanks for your kind reply.
Start her out young by golly!!
How about the Heinlein juveniles? Some good self-sufficiency lessons there!
Agree with Wilder, Narnia, etc. There is also a book for young conservatives that's been out for a few years.
The Giver had a pro-life, pro-individuality bent to it - I liked it and so did my son in 6t grade.
Yes, I think the same of you :)
I'm not sure what you mean by fast. The new DVD doesn't even come close to telling the whole story. The only movie that does the entire story justice is the one the BBC and A&E did and it lasts five hours.
Gwarsh, blush.
But you might be cautious about admitting it publicly. Many hereon might consider you guilty by association . . . of . . . wild strangeness or sheer loonacy!
Thanks, Bro.
What are you doing for fun this summer?
And, do you have any premonition hunches about terrorism or natural disaster stuff in the next few months? As I was eating at Walmart today, I had a flash of a feeling that normalcy was not going to endure in the same form a lot of years longer. Would sure like to be wrong.
In enjoyed a lot of Heinlein over the years. Sometimes, his hostility to spirituality got annoying, though.
I loved the Secret Garden movies (both of them) and just bought a used book for MYSELF.
I bought a Bible especially for teens for my granddaughter and she really liked it. They're about $14 in Walmart's. I also loved the Nancy Drew mysteries and the Bobbsey Twins when I was young.
I THINK it's James Dobson's ministry but not 100% sure, but they have a monthly magazine for teens that's wholesome. You might look into that and she could get one every month for about the same price as good books. M
It consists of Mutiny On The Bounty, Men Against The Sea and Pitcairn's Island.
Perhaps not normal fare for a 12 yr old girl. It has elements of good vs evil, overcoming daunting challenges, survival and justice.
