APPLETON, WI (AP) -- A property owner could face charges after 28 cats were found alone in the home on Sunday.
A 29th cat was recovered Monday after a neighbor saw it sitting in a window, and authorities said others might still be hiding in the structure.
City health officials declared the home uninhabitable after police and firefighters spent more than 11 hours cleaning up debris and removing the animals from the home Sunday.
Police were called to the home on Appleton's south side for a possible restraining order violation. But they found no one home, the house unlocked and knew something was wrong, said police Lt. Greg Franzke.
The cats were found in the basement, bedrooms and a crawl space that goes throughout the house. It wasn't clear how long the animals had been left alone, police said.
The animals were "very wild" said Robin Spears, a humane officer with the police department. The animals included a litter of kittens believed to be a few days old.
Spears said officials found a bag of food but it wasn't clear if the animals had access to water.
Mattresses, sofa cushions, blankets and other items were soaked in urine, she said. Garbage and feces were everywhere.
"It's unbelievable," Spears said.
She said charges of abandoning or mistreating animals could be filed.
The animals were taken to the Fox Valley Humane Association for evaluation.
Franzke said Monday that police located the woman who owns the house and lived there with her adult daughter, but neither had been living there for two or more weeks.
That reminds me...the litter box needs cleaning, LOL!
What is the cat count at your place? :)
I hear they're charging her with a feliny. [rim-shot]
Two. Spayed sisters. Very clean and neat cats. Black American Shorthairs with bright green eyes. >@@< Adopted from our local shelter. Ours is the first home they've ever had and they were 4 years old when we got them; they spent the first six months hiding in the basement until they came to trust us. :)
LOL!
My wife was a collector before I moved her to Texas.
She had 4 indoor cats and feed every cat that lived in a 10 mile radius. I have no idea how many showed up at dinner time.
I let her bring 4 to Texas. It has taken 7 yrs, but we are now down to no cats and 2 small lap dogs (shitz shus).
Woo-Hoo!
"The Crazy Cat Lady" from the Simpsons.
We also have two dogs; had three but the oldest Black Lab had to be put down last fall. :( We still have a Black Lab and a Basset Hound. I also have 62 laying hens, but they live out in the coop and actually EARN their keep!
I, too, am looking forward to being "petless" in the future. My husband is the housepet lover, so I'm the one always putting HER foot down about him finding any more strays and the like and bringing them home.
Who does all the work for the pets? Me. Who do the pets do backflips over when he comes home at the end of the day? Yep. You guessed it, LOL!
She's patterned after my "Crazy Aunt Ruth." I'm certain of it, LOL!
I didn't know cats liked sno-cones, LOL! They look cold! You'd better bring them in for some Hot Tuna Casserole. ;)
They were so afraid of us, like I was going to kill them. I fed them twice a day they got so fat this past winter. I have not seen them in a few days. They are older now and on their own. I have four of my own cats in the house. I love my puttys.
