(snip) KENNETT SQUARE, Pa. - Barbaro is enjoying a quiet Memorial Day weekend, good news for the Kentucky Derby winner who is a week removed from surgery for a life-threatening injury.
"Barbaro is doing very well and seems perfectly content spending his holiday weekend at New Bolton Center receiving abundant carrots, apples and veterinary attention," said Corinne Sweeney, executive director at the University of Pennsylvania's New Bolton Center.

"They" would be Dr. Richardson and company. I don't know who the other vets are there. There is a vet from Fair Hill Training Center that is keeping up with Barbaro too (her office is in Matz's barn) and I believe she also mentioned that it didn't look like a big deal. Personally, as long as Dr. Richardson says it is not a big deal, I would just go with that. This guy is amazing.
Oh, I know, I was kidding and being *snippy* - like "well, who do they think they are, saying our boy is ok?"
I *know* who they are! The lady is Kathy Anderson, who is his primary, isn't it? There's also Corinne Sweeney, who heads up the Center and comments on him all the time in the media. There may be other human ladies, too.
So glad that all looked good when they changed the cast. Sure hope he is feeling better.
Get well, Big Boy!
Yea, Kathy is the one who almost literally followed Matz from showjumping to horse racing. I think she got there first though, and had the job at Fair HIll before Matz got there. But when he found out she was there he wanted her attached to his barn.
LOL I know you were teasing LOL, but I figured that I probably should clarify. I forgot about Sweeny. I am not sure about Katy being "primary", but I know she looked after him at Fair Hill.
That's good enough for me. I read an in-depth profile of her a couple of weeks ago, I think by a paper in Saskatchewan, where she is from. She really takes good care of B - drives a long way each time she goes to see him. I like that.
The story I read called her his primary - pre-Preakness. She went with the horse ambulance that day. She is his "whisperer" and confidante, lol.
Update 173: Again, no real update this morning. Given the current situation where Barbaro appears to have been more uncomfortable lately (yesterday anyway) it is harder to get updates. This is not because people are not willing to provide them, but because I don't have the 'energy' to ask them. You can tell just passing Michael Matz's crew this morning that the same spirit of optimism is being tested. I assume there will be something coming from New Bolton concerning yesterday's events at some point, but I am sure they are overwhelmed too. We were warned that Barbaro would have good days, and not so good days. Lets hope we are just experiencing a little of the latter and things improve quickly.
This is from Alex Brown of the Tim Woolley racing site. Hopefully there will be some positive news sometime today. I can't imagine how the barn feels right now.
UPDATE
Update 174: Just spoke to Peter Brette who visited Bobby today. It does appear his level of discomfort has improved a little, but there is still some discomfort for which they are trying to determine the cause. I asked Peter how he looked physically, and he said he looked well, was eating etc. so that is good. Peter also reiterated that the bone-healing process is as good as they could possibly expect, if not better. Please keep thinking your positive thoughts for Barbaro.
A little more about the *earlier* discussion:
~~~~~
" ... In a release from the George D. Widener Hospital for Large Animals at the University of Pennsylvania's New Bolton Center, Dr. Richardson also indicated Barbaro showed a slight elevation in body temperature.
Dr. Richardson said he found the infection in the hoof near the frog, a V-shaped cushiony growth that helps absorb shock, during the surgical examination.
He is treating the infection topically and Barbaro is on systemic antibiotics, a common post-surgical practice. He also has a new protective shoe on his left hind foot, which is designed to help protect the horse from laminitis, a painful inflammation. And he is being closely monitored to make sure he is comfortable.
No one knows how much longer Barbaro will have to remain at the hospital in Kennett Square but estimates suggest he will remain there for at least two more months. ..."
HAPPY REPORT!!! BARBARO IS FELING BETTER!
Update 176: Barbaro is a little more comfortable this morning! Just saw Michael Matz (who offered to pony me as I was stuggling to get a new horse on to the track)...Michael had already received a call from Dr. Richardson this morning giving the good report.
Update from timwoolleyracing.com
Update 183: Spoke to Peter Brette who visited Barbaro later today (saturday). He was happy with Bobby, and expressed some encouragement that he was doing well (relative to the last few days). Bobby received a massage today, and subsequent to the massage slept for a couple of hours. While we need to remain very cautious, Peter's "visit report" was a little encouraging.
Thank you, thank you. I haven't had enough time to go around for all the people and horses I care about, so I really appreciate this *good news* ping, straight from Bobby's stall. Saw too many mopey stories in the news yesterday, so just said a prayer and waited.
Go Barbaro Go!
I forgot to add.. this is from Alex Brown's mouth to our ears. Alex is an exercise rider at Fair Hill. He maintains Tim's racing web site. He has been an absolute doll in getting these updates from Michael Matz, Peter Brette, and Kathy Anderson. I WISH I was in Barbaro's stall!! LOL
I was going to say "straight from the horse's mouth" but changed my mind. I know your source, lol. Read my posts sometimes with a giggle in them, "TIC", except for the really serious ones.
My former forum didn't always catch on (I'm not always being sarcastic or TIC throughout a whole post, so I don't always do the "/sarc off" thing) - until a few of them talked on the phone with me.
Then they realized that I'm laughing a lot when I'm talking, just like posting. Once they realized that, it made a difference. I can't LOLOLOL all the time because it makes others nutzo. Thanks again for the Barbaro info!
Hahaha ok. I wasn't sure. On another thread I accidently made others think that I was actually at Fair Hill getting this information myself. OOPS!!!!! Boy how do I wish! But, to no avail. I am stuck in Texas :O)I would stay at Fair Hill all day and report, report, report!
I hear ya on that. At least we're not "stuck in old Lodi again" - just Texas.
"When I die, I may not go to heaven, 'cause I don't know if they let cowgirls in ... if they don't, then let me go to Texas, cause Texas is as close as I've been."
LOLOL!!! Where do you live here? I am in Conroe, just about 35 or 40 miles north of Houston.
Then I am just "35 or 40 miles" south of you. Howdy, neighbor!
Barbaro is doing worse :O::(
Update 185: Peter Brette just called (sunday 1pm). Barbaro is not doing as well as he had been yesterday. Peter had not visited Bobby, but had been talking to others. He did not have any details, but I could just tell in his voice he was pretty concerned (it was a short conversation). Peter may call later if he hears more, but now is the time to channel all positive energy for Bobby. If I hear more I will post.
