Nifong will make a phone call.
They don't keep texting?
It takes me 10 minutes to text something I can say in 5 seconds.
I'm not doubting what the rep told you is true or not. But I'll bet you a nickel that 6 months ago if you would have asked that same rep if Verizon was sending every from and to telephone number on all calls made in the U.S. to Homeland Security / NSA, you would have been told "huh uh", "no way, we don't do that"...
You would not believe the number of things large companies tell you they can't or don't do, but they really can and do..do...
There is probably not a record of the actual text message, but I bet there is a record of date and time sent and received. Just like records of phone calls. They can probably tell what cell tower it hit as well.
POST 666 BUMP!
That is so true.
To be fair, Verizon & Bell South strongly denied that they gave any records to the NSA and I think Bell South demanded retractions of the stories. AT&T said it does not turn over any records without court orders.
Um......okay. Is "666" supposed to be bad luck or somethin'?
Strongly denied.... ?? is that like grave danger? ... j/k..
Ok.. I'll go along to get along... the phone companies strongly denied that they gave the data to HSA / NSA... but, the government somehow has the data..
I'll just leave it at that...

Yes.
Maybe they mean a chapel or place of Worship for feminists.
Durham would be better served with a Center that teaches about our basic rights and building blocks of our justice system. Justice for all (even white males), Equal Protection, and Innocent until proven Guilty.
All Radical ideas!
According to the Verizon person:
"Txt msg you can keep, probably, up to 30. Pix msg will show the last 10 sent on your cell phone. You can go into "sent mgs" and "erase" (delete)."
I am sure you are correct about what large companies do and do not do.
My friends had no idea that year-old email messages could be retrieved. I'm not sure, however, if local police departments are able to do that. The feds can.
"No such proof was offered by your newspaper because no such contracts exist," stated the letter, portions of which were read by spokesman Jeff Battcher. "You have offered no proof that BellSouth provided massive calling data to the NSA as part of a warrantless program because it simply did not happen."
That's pretty strong. :-)
Yah... but... does the NSA / HSA have the data or don't they?
mark
If USA Today doesn't know, then they shouldn't print the story.
Kinda like Nifong doesn't know that a rape occurred, so he shouldn't have press conferences saying that one did.
If the USA Today doesn't know what?
From the article it seemed like common knowledge that the NSA did have the data..
It also appears from my reading of Bell South and other telco statements, they said they didn't do anything illegal..
Do you disagree that the NSA has the data?
If you do not, then how did they get it?
If you do, then why has the DOJ and / or their spokespeople been explaining that there's been no eavesdropping and no personal information is attached to the numbers?
And if they don't have the data, why are lawsuits being filed against several of the telcos for providing it?
If the NSA doesn't have the data then the other stuff is moot...
My opinion is that the NSA does have the data. I wonder how they got it...
Well, the lawsuits don't mean too much yet. We will see how far they go, and what they reveal.
If USA Today has evidence, why don't they produce it? They were asked to retract the story and may be sued by Bellsouth.
I certainly won't trust the media's word on anything these days.
It doesn't even make sense to collect everbody's calling records anyway. You'd be wading through 99.9% useless data.
It makes a lot more sense to monitor calling patterns anonymously and only ask about getting the records when you see a pattern of calls that is suspicious.
How would they monitor call patterns w/o the records?
