I think tech support got you going off into a different direction. :)

There is a Nero shortcut, but I dont see any record of files there to burn?

You'll have to drag and drop those files into the Nero window in order to burn those files to a CD. It's empty by default when you open Nero up.

when I went to copy music onto a CD, I could see that I transferred something, but when I put it in the computer, since it was not playing in CD player, it looks like they are Windows Media files. How do you get that to play back when not in the computer?
