Google releases Picasa for Linux -- and 100+ Wine patches

Picasa is a photo organizing and editing tool from Google that does most of what most people need to do with their digital pictures. Now Picasa, previously a Windows-only program, has binaries available for most popular GNU/Linux distributions. The Linux version of Picasa is still a beta release, but it's ready to handle photo storage, organizing, and light photo editing on your Linux computer.

Even if you don't want to use Picasa, Google's creation of the Linux version may help make your Linux computer more versatile. The Picasa Linux port is being made with Wine, and in the process more than 100 patches are being contributed back to the community.

Google spokesperson Chris DiBona says, "At the end of this, a lot of people will be able to use Wine who weren't able to before."

Google hired CodeWeavers to do much of the work needed to get Picasa to run on Linux with Wine, but long-time Wine community contributor Dan Kegel also helped; he works for Google.

According to DiBona, the Picasa Linux beta release currently lacks these features:

* CD Burning * TiVo Export * Support for languages other than English * Hello™ instant picture chat

Picasa does not work with SELinux due to problems with camera recognition caused by SELinux's security features.

DiBona cautions all downloaders: "This is a beta version. We're expecting bugs." But he also says that, except for the features specifically noted as not working, this is a fully-functional program, ready for everyday use.

And again, even if you have no interest in Picasa, it looks like even those of us who haven't tried Wine in a while should start keeping an eye on it again. The Google-contributed code may mean a whole new level of functionality for anyone who must use "Windows-only" software but wants to run nothing but GNU/Linux on his or her PC.

Picasa is available here for these GNU/Linux distributions:

* Debian Sid and Etch * Fedora Core 4 and 5 * Mandriva 2005 and 2006 * Red Hat (current versions) * Linspire 5.0 * SUSE 9.3 and 10 * Ubuntu 5.x

'm sure the free software fanatics aren't too happy about this, as Google isn't making a linux-native version, but instead are trying to run the windows version by emulating the existence of windows within linux.

From my understanding, it's just using the Wine libs and is a native Linux binary.

Oh, and they did provide over 200 patches/upgrades to the Wine project.

Are you saying that open source software is immoral?

What part of the name Wine Is Not an Emulator do you not understand?

Shocking, maybe you're ready to condemn software released under their moonbat GPL license?

Why would any reasonable person do that? You haven't even mentioned a software that we could evaluate and praise or condemn. As far as the choice of license, that's the author's business, and his right under the Constitution.

Not as immoral as all leftist causes, but equal to those such as socialism. The GPL author Stallman wants a "software tax" paid by everyone so once all software is free, money can still be collected for maintenance as needed. It's extreme socialist views like his that should be countered by capitalists and conservatives, but due to the relative unpopularity of Stallman's software none of the issues have yet made the grand stage.

Wine Is Not an Emulator

I could care less what the leftist moonbats brainwashed you to believe, but Wine does emulate Windows at the API level. Most people think Wine stands for WINdows Emulator, since that's exactly what it does.

Because it's a moonbat license designed by a major moonbat to push explicit moonbat goals of making all software free. Obviously moonbats like it, doesn't mean I ever will.

Now you're just going to quibble over definitions:

Myth 1: "Wine is slow because it is an emulator"

Some people mean by that that Wine must emulate each processor instruction of the Windows application. This is plain wrong. As Wine's name says: "Wine Is Not an Emulator": Wine does not emulate the Intel x86 processor. It will thus not be as slow as Wabi which, since it is not running on a x86 Intel processor, also has to emulate the processor.

Most people think Wine stands for WINdows Emulator

Most people used to think the Earth was flat. Your point?

As far as moonbats, the Wine people are pretty far away from that. If you've ever been to the site, you'll notice that they have to defend themselves against the extremists (your OSS alter-egos).

And if it works for an author it's none of your damn business, no matter how many problems the license has. We know for a fact that Linus Torvalds doesn't subscribe to Stallman's grand vision, he just sees the license as a tool. I can't see any problem with that.

Funny though, you always shied away when I showed how bad Microsoft's licenses can be -- damaging to the point of restricting freedom of speech. And you don't care about that.

LOL who said it did? It emulates Windows, obviously.

Oh yes it is, just like all the "choices" of the left that adversely affect our overall society are my business. And making all software free will adversely affect our society, starting with the destruction of the fortunes of several of the richest Americans, in the name of socialist theory.

Hilarious, I'm the one speaking out against the socialists and their agenda, and you try to accuse me of being one. Anything but admit Stallman and his "community" are the leftists, obviously.

Wine is NOT an emulator. It's a compatibility layer that acts as an intermediary between the host Linux system and the Windows binaries the user wants to run.

All it really does is create compatibility by making and using a fake Windows tree. Commercial versions such as CxO use bottles, which enable a user to hold compatibility for a specific system such as Win98 or Win2k.

Another example of a compatibility layer is in FreeBSD, which enables Linux binaries capable with the 2.4 series (IIRC, 2.4.12) to run.

Are you really this ignorant? Good thing you're studing political science and not a real science.

I use Wine.

I know how it works.

You have absolutely no clue about running a *nix system--which several of us have unquestionably exposed for all to see. Therefore, I'd strongly advise you to keep your mouth closed before you dig yourself a deeper hole...

You don't know jack about jack kid. You're a political science major in college, while I have a degree in engineering and have been working professionally on computers for more years than you have been alive. If you had ever been right on anything you have ever said to me, I would tell you. But so far you haven't been. Nor does it appear you will be anytime soon.
