Did ya kill the snake when it got too big or release it? Theres a big python problem in Florida as released pets have taken a foothold and are breeding. I guess it was cool to own them....Just like it's cool to own a fighting breed.
Look at me!

Don't worry these people who are afraid of pit bulls are probably also afraid of the dark.

First, Colombian Boa's don't get nearly as large as pythons, nor do they have the temperment, particularly compared to reticulated pythons and to a lesser extent burmese. A large, full grown boa will seldom exceed 12 feet in length. (seldom being the key word).
I sold 'Java' to a friend of mine before I moved to Canada for grad school. She was just under 6' long, and weighed no more than 6-7 lbs (before meal). The largest thing she ever ate when I had her was a guinnea pig, and it took her about a half hour to swallow it. Not much of a threat as far as I am concerned.
I chose a boa, because they are beautiful and have a good temperment. Also, because if I would have kept her indefinitely, she wouldn't require a huge amount of space like a retic or burmese python would. Furthermore, I knew that since they don't get particularly large, selling her if space were a concern would not be an issue.
For the record, I was never bit. Not once.
Invasive species are certainly a concern, though it is not limited to reptiles. Stray dogs and feral cats are much more of an issue, and do far more damage than released reptiles. Do we ban dogs and cats?
I guess it was cool to own them....Just like it's cool to own a fighting breed. Look at me!
Or a large SUV/truck, firearms, motorcycles......
