Pit bulls shot to death after attack on cow (sad picture of mother cow, protecting it's calf)

Cecil Wallace awoke about 4:30 a.m. Saturday to the bawling of cows and the howling of dogs. The Buford farmer grabbed his shotgun and went running out the back door.

His son and next-door neighbor, Kenneth Wallace, also jarred awake — also carrying a shotgun — joined him. Father and son ran toward the pasture...

...Reaching the pasture, the Wallaces saw a cow, bloodied and torn, its calf standing nearby. As they approached the animal, according to reports, two dogs came running towards them.

Kenneth Wallace raised his 12-gauge. Boom! The larger dog hit the dirt, howling. Wallace fired again, and the dog was quiet.

The female kept coming. Kenneth Wallace fired a third time, the blast echoing along the darkened reaches of Bart Johnson Road.

The Wallaces dragged the dogs' bodies aside and tended to the cow, Betsy. She looked bad — right ear torn off, the left shredded like paper. Her nose was ripped and torn. Two teeth were knocked loose. Not long after daybreak, Cecil Wallace took Betsy to a Cumming veterinarian, who prescribed painkillers and antibiotics for the Angus/Hereford cross.

"She's still in bad shape," Cecil Wallace, 73, said Tuesday. "She tries to eat, but she can't; her mouth's too sore."

Animal control officers have cited one dog owner with failing to have the animal on a leash.. They also charged the owner with violating the county's vicious-animal ordinance, which requires owners of a dangerous dog or cat to have it muzzled whenever the animal is off the owner's property.

Meghan Martin, who lives near the Wallaces, said she is the owner whom officers cited...p>

When I went to sleep, my dog was in bed with me," she said. A roommate let out her dog, plus a friend's pit bull, Martin said...

You are looking in the wrong city. I'm talking about our house in the Palm Springs area. Palos Verdes does not have a pitbull problem because no low lifes that would own one would live there.

And it won't show up on the city website in Palm Springs area as it is at the staff level at present. Public hearings will be announced in a couple of months from now as I said.

You really need to lighten up Francis. No one is attempting to excuse away anything here...

Go back and read their posts. Them most certainly are trying to excuse away the trama to that girl's face.

except for you in your attempt to justify draconian government interference in the lives of law-abiding responsible owners.

It is called petitioning our government for action on our positions. If they don't like it, they can mobilze their forces to oppose legislation aimed at banning pitbulls.

So...the staff prepares reports and recommendations without being requested by council?
They proceed solely on your out of council request?

Anyone who reading this thread knows full well you've never answered any of the issues raised with respect to the personal liberties of the 99+% of dog-owners who've done nothing whatsoever to warrant your personal unreasoned campaign against their pets.

YOu can mistate my position all you want if it makes it easier for you. The facts are I am not advocating banning the "perosnal liberties of the 99+% of dog-owners..." I am advocating restrictions on the ownership of certain breeds of dogs with a history of vicious attackes, specifically pitbulls. Let's keep that point straight.

Second, it is not an unreasoned campaign to petition our local government for a ban on pitbulls. The reason is the dogs are a threat, make people feel uncomfortable and there is sufficient evidence that this breed of dog is not suitable for a residential neighborhood.

Your freedoms are not so all encompassing as you imagine them to be. We are a country of laws, many of which restrict your personal freedoms.

Hey COOL! Way to go champ!! Way to FORCE your views on the rest of us!

It will come to a vote of our representatives on the city council following a staff report and recommendation by city staff. Those that object to a banning of pitbulls will have the opportunity to express their opposition. They also can now rally their supporters to turn up the political pressure.

Do you live in some country where this is not the process?

When you're done with that you can start pushing for a ban on guns, SUV's, and pickups in the name of 'public safety'.

I am not against gun ownership, SUV's and pickups. Guns especially are in the interest of public safety, especially when needed to put down a pitbull that has gone on the attack.

I am not excusing the injury away, I am showing you that you are fixated on something that could have been much worse.

Yea, you are right. The dog could have chewed off her nose. So glad it was not serious. I repeat, you thinking is very sick. You are so fixated on you postion that you simply can not bring yourself to admit that obvious - it was a very terrible thing that happened to that girl in her own yard by a pitbull.

This is the internet.
People can claim all sorts of things even that they are classygreeneyedblondes.
You claim to be taking some action but provide no particulars.
It is prudent that I am wary of your claims.

You are looking at the section of PV near Rat beach - most think that means Right After Torrance, as in the section of beach right after Torrance. This is the Malaga Cove section of PV. You are correct, it is a quite nice place.

You can be wary of my claims all you want. I really don't care. What I can't see is what possible reason I would have to lie about it. We have a problem in this city with Pitbulls - actually a problem with lose dogs and kids owning them because they think it is tough.

Officers in the city have had two incidents that required having to shoot the dogs because they attacked when the officer was making a call to the residence.

Think what you want. Again, I have no reason to lie about it. Use a little logic. It would serve you well.

Ah Rolling Hills High School. Contrary to the photo, that is what it used to be called. They changed the name when they consolidated the three high schools into the area. Use to be the RHHS Titan before it became the PVPHS Panthers.

PIT BULL MAULING: Boy has more surgery Doctors attempt to remove loose bone fragments that might have entered brain

www.reviewjournal.com/.../ news/20778121.html

http://cbs4denver.com/local/local_story_351163056.html

Pit bulls maul boy Owners arrested after one takes, hides animals

An 11-year-old Richmond boy was in critical condition this morning after being mauled last night by three pit bulls who had escaped from a yard, authorities said.

El Dorado County Boy Attacked by Pit Bull

The boy underwent surgery and is recovering from severe wounds to his back, head and eye.

And the list goes on and on and on and on...

"But, I want to own a pitbull. It is my right. There is nothing wrong with the dog. It only ripped out part of the little girls cheek. It is not like it chewed over her nose...or caused bone fragments to enter the brain.

You are all so hysterical because the facts in the face of your denial are overwhelming.

Why then are you not focusing your energies on those two actual problems instead of proposing intrusive legislation that affects innocent, law-abiding, responsible dog owners?

How do you mount the knife to the sappling?>>>>>>>>>>>

Thew knife comes with a small notch on the rear handle edge you can use to clamp the knife to the spear with a screw. That is not secure enough for me. What I do is drill two small holes in the handle and use 2 short dry wall screws to fasten it up tight with the phillips head on my swiss army knife. Some people go through the trouble of making the whole spear before the trip and use cross bolts. I like to do it on the way.

My father and uncles all are camp whittlers. I am the same. The first day out I keep my eyes peeled for a good sappling that is straight and a little wider than the hollow handle on the top end, then harvest it with an axe. Hardwood is best(maple) but a good long straight black spruce sappling from a thicket where they grow tall and straight will do just as well if you dont mind peeling the bark off, or the sticky sap.It should be about 8 feet long. In camp the first night I simply whittle the sappling end into the right cone shape, by repeatedly fitting it into the handle, until I get a solid snug fit way up into the handle. I then take out my trusty swiss army knife, open up the phillips head screw driver and screw the short dry wall screws into the holes I have predrilled. ( Drilling the holes about 2 inches apart takes about five minutes with a hand drill at home.)When I finish the fitting and squaring the butt, the spear is usually between 6 or 7 feet long. Make sure to mount the knife on the skyward end of the sappling, its incredibly bad luck to mount it on the earthward end, but do as you please. If the butt starts to split you can resquare it or serve it with tightly wrapped and tied fish line. As time goes on, you will get better at selecting straighter sapplings and smoothing the shaft. Sometimes I use beach sand to get the shaft really smooth, and by the end of the trip, the spear shaft is scrimshawed with art.I even tie feathers I find to the haft just behind the knife handle, using fishing line.Raven feathers work well to keep track of wind direction.

I keep the spear on the floor of the canoe with the knife in the sheath, and use it for poling the canoe when in shallow water. I leave the sheath on when poling. My dad taught me how to stand up and do this but be careful, its tricky balancing with two in the canoe if your partner moves much. The Indian people used to do this a lot. (If going into rough water, I lash the spear to the thwart with rope, just like the other gear.) I usually whittle the spear shaft , as an ongoing project in camp, peeling the bark off, smoothing out the knots and squaring the butt. Its good that the butt has a few knots in it to discourage splitting, you can see that when you cut the sappling. I do this smoothing work as a matter of respect for the weapon, and if a native Indian sees it, he will understand why you have it a lot better, its not just a cold killing tool but a way to pass the time enjoyably.

At the end of the trip, I take out my trusty swiss army knife, and unscew the dry wall screws, and put the knife in sheath in my pack. Usually I burn the spear at my last camp fire. (I have even used the spear as a quick in a pinch fishing rod by tying leader and hook to it).

I do get some queer looks from other canoists about the spear, but have never been castigated, when I tell them its bear insurance, because of the recent attacks you have mentioned. If you ever have to use it, prod the bear with the spear about its cheeks and nose until it stands up and sink the spear right into its solar plexis or base of the neck as deeply as you can, avoid the ribs. If you have to thrust into ribs do it from low to high at an angle so the blade will slip in between them.Pull it out and reinsert as many times as necessary. You will find after the first few prods that most bears will turn and tucker, rather than stand. If the spear shaft is broken by the bear after you have inserted it, go for your camp axe and finish the job. BTW Do not try to use it on a moose that might chase you. Thats what trees are for ( LOL), but I am told that Indian people use to wait for moose to feed on Water Lilly roots, and stalk the moose by paddling up on it silently when its head is under water. When next to the animal they speared it deeply towards the heart from the left side if possible, just behind the foreleg shoulder. They must have been wild crazy and hungry! I have done the same, but used a camera, instead of a spear.

A spear is a good weapon, and not at all a toy. My dad always said to be real careful with it.

There is a photo here of the result of spearing a bear.

Good luck!

The alleged "pitbull" isn't even tough enough for hunting pigs in this country. You only have to see a razorback pig and the size of its tusks to see you need a dog that really can bite for that sort of work. The campaign against the so-called "pitbull" started with PETA - an extreme left-wing group by any standards. PETA wants to ban all pets and started with the so-called "pitbull" because its now very distant relatives were used for dog fighting in England. I suppose like the Fabian Socialists in England in the late nineteenth century, PETA might try to spread its message by permeating other groups and forums.

Your freedoms are not so all encompassing as you imagine them to be. We are a country of laws, many of which restrict your personal freedoms.>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Freedom isn't free and obviously you have not paid enough for yours. And liberal wing nuts have tried for years to impose their residential Utopian vision on all Americans, without much success in the red states. So if your neighborhood is under a perceived pitt bull threat , you think you can solve it by banning pitt bulls. Try and ban the sky!

BWAAAAAA HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

You will have to ban all dogs eventually, because any of them can be viscious. What about the Mexicallis who train whole packs of attack chihuahuas, or once dogs are banned altogether, those who have attack geese on their properties ( no joke)

The fact is the law WILL NOT protect you or anyone. You have to be prepared to protect yourself, no matter what the law says. Now why not wait until a pitt bull strays on to your property , take out a shot gun and blast it ? Becuase your conmmunity would think you crazy and insane, because its not necessary, thats why.

You have a pickle and it isn't logic, its raw bleeding heart selfishness you want to pimp as compassion: emotion, that you will remove liberty of your disrespected fellow citizens to defend their own persons and property, thereby compounding the problem of self protection and defense. If people cannot have pitt bulls ask yourself what they will have in their stead, and I guarantee, you will not like the answer, or will you?

It seems that you are a rather subversive type, and your goal is to destablize your hood, rather than Utopianize it.

That shite may work on Liberals deary, but you are barking ( LOL) up the wrong tree here! For someone who hates Pitt Bulls you sure do act like one! Closet socialism disguised as liberal claptrap.!A self proclaimed saint on a farting horse? Bless you, you are so kind. We had a few like you in our town and ran them out , tarred and feathered on a rail. One was a convicted child molester who used political connections to avoid being posted on the sexual predator web list. We burned his car in his driveway , and he moved back to Florida. That is our law.

You have not paid for the freedoms you enjoy yet, which is why you disrespect the freedom of your fellow citizens who have pitt bulls.Freedom is not free, and one day you will pay. We are a country of laws but we also are a country of liberty based action. As citizens we know that laws are only as good as their ability to be enforced and that we must act ourselves when laws are unfair , devolutionary or passed by little totalitarion loving citizens who do not know what freedom is nor have paid the price for it.
