Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro was in surgery Sunday fighting for his life a day after breaking his ankle at the Preakness, and the colt's surgeon said he's never worked on so many catastrophic injuries to one horse. Dr. Dean Richardson was operating at the University of Pennsylvania's New Bolton Center for Large Animals and said the procedure could take several hours.

I agree. And if it wasn't working out, they would have stopped it, I think. It must, at least for now, be working.

And on the right hand side there are video links that may show the race and the injury. It was truly painful to watch him trying to run on three legs, and occasionally being forced to step on a leg that was breaking.
Probably the most ~shudder~ inducing photo is this one I saw on a horse shoeing forum.

I really do pray that horse makes it okay.
Dear Lord....
Beyond the suffering of the horse, I'm sure the jockey is beside himself as well....
Everyone says Prado did a great job under terrible circumstances. If there is any hope in the time ahead, he will have played a role in it.
Now I'm trying to hope.
yeah....me too...
I had the video up and my wife couldn't watch it....
You think there are considerations outside of the owner. A dominant Kentucky Derby winner who goes down this way shouldn't be given this consideration if the owner wants to try?
Who is the "they" here?
He was... did you see the pictures of him? There's a picture of him bent over... saddle thrown on the ground in a heap. Broke my heart.
No horse is more loved than mine, but I couldn't afford these efforts for my own horse either. This surgery will cost into the tens of thousands. It's a consideration. Not sure what your point is.
I hadn't yet.
I mean, my stomach went into a knot watching it and I've never met the horse.....
This isn't exactly the same moment I saw where he was bent over... but it's poignant.
yeah....
ouch....

This is one magnificent horse. Funny how you don't hear from PETA... |
You've got to be kidding me? There's room for hope.
Thank you for posting this information!
I cry every time they show the tape. That poor thing...I sure hope he makes it. I'm praying for him. I'm not that much into horse racing as a sport, but I've had a love of horses my entire life. They are the most beautiful, graceful and majestic of God's creations.
Very tragic. When I saw Barbaro crow hopping along, I just felt sick. But I have a horse who suffered a really horrible leg injury, should have been put down, but rallied at the last moment (without extraordinary measures), and is now getting fat and sassy on good Florida bahia grass...I hope Barbaro makes it.
