What was meant to be a friendly chat to promote the new "X-Men" movie turned into a frosty discussion about race on a popular morning radio program, but the British Broadcasting Corp. defended its disc jockey - reports Associated Press.
Oscar-winning actress Halle Berry appeared on Chris Moyles' Radio One breakfast show Thursday and clashed with her host after he impersonated what he described as a "big, fat, black guy."
"Are we having a racist moment here?" Berry, the first black actress to win an Academy Award for a lead role, asked Moyles after she took exception to his impersonation. Moyles, who is white, said he just couldn't do American accents.
Moyles made it clear on air that there was nothing racist in what he said, a BBC spokesman said Friday on condition of anonymity, in line with the corporation's policy.
The exchange began when Hugh Jackman, Berry's "X-Men: The Last Stand" co-star, jokingly suggested that Moyles might take the role of his body double if he ever landed the part of James Bond.
"I could definitely do that," Moyles said before adding, "Put your hands in the air!"
A somewhat puzzled Jackman replied, "Are you some kind of Brooklyn Bond?"
Moyles replied: "I'm a black American guy. A big, fat, black guy. Put your hands up in the air."
The interview continued, though the DJ later said Berry was "ratty" -- British slang for grouchy.
Berry won an Oscar in 2002 for her role in "Monster's Ball."
Nothing racist about doing a bad impression of a black guy. Just another Brit ignoramus who goes by comfortable stereotypes of Americans, that's all.
Halle Berry is not black. She is mulatto.
She should have slapped him
That said, do think he was just being his little, ignorant Lefty self here. . .
Well, he WAS our frist black Pres....ah, I can't even type that, it's so ridiculous. :)
Yes. . .and painfully so. . .
Ping
"I AM A SERIOUS SOCIETAL COMMENTATOR, DAMMIT!"
"Halle Berry is not black. She is mulatto."
And Tiger Woods was the first black Masters champion, never mind he's half Asian. Only the black part matters. You know that.
"He's been discriminated against in his time, he's had death threats, and he dates a white woman. Sounds like a black guy to me."
I tried to find the picture of Bubba wearing the big hat and black dreadlocks (he was onstage someplace and it was in his first term). No such luck though.
But it fits the bill to a T for the above impersonation.
So was Bob Marley.
Whis Britt or Tony or Sean could find it. ...Good grief. ..what a total, abject loser and before he moved into 'treasonous' mode. . .
Halle Berry was raised by her mother, who is white. Her father was black, and no good, by her own report.
It is therefore disingenuous when Halle Berry goes on and on about being a "strong black woman." She owes her success to very plain but good white woman. Just once I'd like to hear her talk about what a great example her white mother was. Oprah didn't make Halle, her mother did.
She's attractive and she's a good actress, but she's an idiot.
