The British Invasion

I was rather lucky to have grown up in one of the most amazing periods in the history of modern music, what has become known as the “British Invasion”. It wasn’t really an invasion of the U.S. by an armed force from another country; rather it was an invasion of our music charts by British recording artists. I was in the eighth grade when I first heard “I Want to Hold Your Hand” and “She Loves You” by the Beatles. Prior to 1964 the British had only two hit records that topped the U.S. charts. Those were “Stranger on the Shore” by Acker Bilk and “Telstar” by the Tornadoes, both in 1962.

In 1964 Ed Sullivan, the host of the hugely popular “Ed Sullivan Show” was at a New York airport when the Beatles landed from England to go on their first U.S. tour. Crowds of screaming young girls greeted the Beatles and Ed was curious as to what the commotion was all about. He met with the Beatles on the spot and offered them $50,000 to appear on his show. The Beatles agreed and the British Invasion was officially underway. On February 9, 1964, the largest audience in the history of American television watched the Beatles perform live on the Ed Sullivan show. I was one of them.

For some years prior to 1964 young British musicians had idolized American music stars and many of the Americans were more popular in Britain than they were at home. The young Brits listened to Buddy Holly, Leadbelly, Elvis, Chuck Berry, Little Richard, the Everly Brothers, Gene Vincent, Eddie Cochran and many others. The U.S. musicians became like Gods to the young British musicians and they worked hard to emulate them.

The Animals (Eric Burdon), The Beatles, Chad and Jeremy, The Dave Clark Five, Freddy and the Dreamers, Herman’s Hermits, The Kinks (Ray Davies), Donovan, The Hollies (Graham Nash), The Rolling Stones (Mick Jagger and Keith Richards), Billy J. Kramer and the Dakota’s, Wayne Fontana and the Mindbenders, Dusty Springfield, The Troggs, The Searchers, Gerry and the Pacemakers, Peter and Gordon, The Honeycombs, Manfred Mann, The Yardbirds (Jeff Beck, Jimmy Page and Eric Clapton), The Zombies, The Moody Blues, The Walker Brothers, Petula Clark, The Move, The Small Faces (Rod Stewart), The Who (Pete Townshend, Roger Daltry), Argent, John Mayall’s Blues breakers (Eric Clapton, Peter Green), Fleetwood Mac (Peter Green), Cream (Eric Clapton), Jethro Tull (Ian Anderson), Procol Harum (Robin Trower), Led Zeppelin (Jimmy Page, Robert Plant), Traffic (Dave Mason, Stevie Winwood), Deep Purple and The Spencer Davis Group (Stevie Winwood).

Oh, you remember a lot more than Stevie Winwood, I'm sure.

The Rolling Stones are like rock Gods.

The Merseybeat. Remember that?

Nope, don't have a horse in that race. Flipping back and forth between X-Men2 movie and Twins baseball, while listening to your tunes.

Jimmi's story is pretty fascinating.

He worked in Little Richard's Band and in the Islay Brother's Band for a while.

Little Richard fired him because Hendrix wanted to wear flashy cloths and be a star too and Little Richard didn't want to get upstaged.

Hendrix went to England to put together a band. He was playing at a nightclub and Chas Chandler of the band the Animals saw him play. Chas assured Jimi that he would hit the big-time in England.

So Jimi went to England and hit the big time he did. The Jimi Hendrix Experience first hit it big in England where Jimi was living at the time. The other two members of his band were British.

So I think Jimi deserves a place in the British Invasion. He influenced rock music everywhere from England.

I have a lot of tunes but there is a lot I don't have too.

The request line will be open all weekend. It will take about 10 minutes to get a request on.

Which of the songs I posted don't you know already?

Those songs were all big hits in their day. All we had was AM radio and 8-track tapes.

My friend Dolly is at the game tonight. She'll probably give us a report when she gets back in later tonight.

I told her the electricty will be in the air tonight at the game. Big excitement you can feel!

I have become LeBron fan watching this CLE-DET series. If I am supposed to believe the b-ball talking heads, he is only on 2 of 8 cylinders right now. If true, I guess I can forgive him for wearing #23.

Today on ESPN they said he was starting to warm up and playing better and better each game of the playoffs.

He's terrific!

I was just that bit too young for Merseybeat and do not know anyone who was into their music.

Stevie Winwood is a favourite of a friend of mine hence the reason that I got into him.

Rolling Stone like some tracks but I am really a girl of the 70s and 80s.

I cringe but I actually like Culture Club

What did you think of the Beatles?

I have some live Johy Mayhall I got from the web for free. It is from 1968. It is real good, as good as any of the bands back in those days.

Until a few years ago John Mayhall was touring with Peter Green (of Fleetwood Mac). John was the warm-up act. They played small places of 150 to 300 or so people.

I think the Isle of White show was Jimi's last live concert.
