Might this hotel have contained a casino by any chance? The hotel I stayed at a few years ago in Coogee (a Sydney beach suburb) had one.

If so,I would think that that's what the perps had in mind.

I doubt it. Sounds like they went for the front bar.

BTW, I lived in Coogee many years ago. It's a nice spot.
