Elliott Yamin was voted off American Idol Wednesday night, leaving Taylor Hicks and Katharine McPhee to battle it out next week.
When it was revealed that Yamin was going home, the audience gasped, Paula Adbul cried and Katharine McPhee and Taylor Hicks hugged him.
But it was over for Yamin, although Ryan Seacrest said he'd lost by an extremely narrow margin: Yamin received 33.06 percent of the final tally, a record 50 million votes.
Without naming names, Seacrest said the other singers racked up 33.26 and 33.68 percent of the votes.
"I'm very proud, and I'm honored," Yamin said, adding that he felt "truly blessed to take advantage of this opportunity." The 27-year-old from Richmond, Va., also indicated his mother and brother in the audience and said he was "so blessed to be able to experience this" with them.
On Tuesday's show, Simon Cowell had predicted Elliott wouldn't make it to the next round. "Your songs are not going to carry you through to next week that's the problem," Cowell said after Yamin delivered his rendition of Ray Charles's "I Believe to My Soul."
"However, you are a great guy," Cowell continued. "You are a great singer. And whatever happens, you will make your mom very proud for what you've achieved for this competition."
Abdul recently told Teen People that Yamin was her choice to win. On Tuesday's show, she told him, "You pierce through the heart."
The winner will be revealed next Wednesday during a live, two-hour finale. Cowell, who in the past accurately predicted Carrie Underwood's victory, this week told Jay Leno on the Tonight Show that he expects Hicks to take the crown.
I'm sure. I'd like to grow money too! I have a Beta too, but I'd rather have a pirahna!
You can be even more amazed if Taylor Hicks wins the thing. No white guy has ever won the competition. If you don't want to wait until Wednesday night to find our who won though, check out dialidol.com late Tuesday or early Wednesday. They measure the busy signals on Tuesday nights and have been pretty good at predicting the winners/losers.
I had hoped Chris would have been the next Idol, but now I hope Taylor is.
I have to say I am extremely dissapointed that Alliot goes while Kathrine stays. After her last three weeks, she has absolutely no business on the show anymore.
Watching super talented people get voted off week after week and her still there trashes my faith in the general public more and more.
Er.. "Elliot".. (hey mods... how 'bout that "edit post" feature?) :P
To be honest, I can't stand the rocker guys...Bo from last year, the bald guy this year. They grate on me. I've yeet to see any that I'd buy a CD from. It's kinda fun to see the pressure of competition though.
I'll give it a shot. Or I could put a gold fish in with the beta and watch some gore. LOL
Katherine did well on the Over the Rainbow song. But I'm guessing its her looks that keep her in.

I agree that it's her looks that keep her in. I am gonna have to disagree about her version of Over the Rainbow. Everybody seems to like it but I thought it was literally excruciating to listen to. Especially compared to what it could of been, the stops and starts that she added and messing around with the meter of the song to "make it her own" made it awful.
The song was arranged poorly, but her vocals were better than they have been, cause its her "type" of song. Screeching Elvis songs ade her look real bad.
He's fun. But I think he's destined to singing in bars.

I don't doubt that she deserved to be in the top 5, she had a great voice.. but her still there while Elliot Yamin gets the boot? Travesty.
He would have got the boot alot sooner if he did not grow his hair out. He first looked like an Eminem wannabee.
What are the odds that these votes are so close?
I'll tell you it's 100%. I believe that all of the call trunks used for voting are saturated with the maximum number of votes being recorded on each line. Given those conditions the winner is always going to be a close coin toss. Hopefully for the final they will get more trunks.
An entertaining Vegas lounge singer doing Springsteen covers.
It also is true that no one stands out as significantly more talented (or untalented, as the case may be) than the others.
