Educator Asks To Take Student To Prom:

PASADENA, Texas -- A city of South Houston teacher was placed on administrative leave, accused of having an improper relationship with a student, KPRC Local 2 reported Monday.

Officials at South Houston High School said they began asking questions after the English teacher, Sean Eckman, 29, asked his principal if he could take a 17-year-old student to prom.

"He asked for permission to take her to the prom. He said he was a family friend and that the parents had agreed that it would be OK," said Kirk Lewis, the Pasadena Independent School District superintendent.

An investigation began.

"The culmination of those investigations led us to believe he had engaged in a sexual relationship with a 17-year-old student," Lewis said.

Police filed charges of inappropriate behavior between an educator and a student.

The principal sent a letter home to parents letting them know about the allegations against Eckman.

"I don't think it's right -- no matter what the age of the student is. That's wrong," parent Gloria Sales said.

Eckman resigned from his teaching position.

He remained jailed on a $100,000 bond

Folks, for those of you that do not live in the Houston area of Texas, which is where "Pasa-get down-dena" is...this is hardly surprising.

I did a stint of substitute teaching when I was in college in the area...the female high-school students are lookers and some are danger bad flirts, but that's not an excuse for hot housing one and then taking her to prom.

Some dudes take their mother.

That's illegal in 49 states.

Sorry, misinterperted your post...since I havent taught in every school in the country...hard for me to attest to what's going on at other schools around the country.

But, i assume u r right, that there is little difference in other places.

This guy was just weak. When u teach kids, u have to seem them as "kids", no matter how developed and persuasive they may be.

Not quite. He's not in trouble because she's a minor. In fact, she's at the age of consent (17) in Texas. The problem, apparently, is a state law that forbids such relationships between students & teachers.

Why is he in jail then?

I think the issue is, despite the fact she's 17, the affair began before she was of legal age...and he can get nailed for that.

In Hoc.

Why is he in jail then?

All I have to go on is the article which states: "Police filed charges of inappropriate behavior between an educator and a student".

Sounds to me like there's a particular state law he's being charged under that doesn't necessarily involve sexual conduct with someone under the age of consent. Perhaps a law also applicable to college profs & university students. I could, of course, be wrong.
