Sounds like company is looking for qualified workers. They will never find a computer programmer or an electrical engineer for $10/hour in the US (or even in India). I wonder what is this job that pays $18/hour and nobody wants it?..

They probably located there knowing that nobody in their right mind would go there for jobs. They advertise $18 per hour and only advertise locally where the the pool of possible employees is low. That way they can truthfully say that they can't find enough workers and they can then hire legal or illegal aliens at lower rates than $18.

There are plenty of people who would take them up on it if they properly advertised the jobs. The incident of Alabama job service workers going to N.O. to do cleanup and then being turned away when "the Mexicans arrived" shows that americans will go the distance to do unpleasant work if the pay is reasonable.

Apparently these are not Union wages or they would be 50% higher with fewer workers.

This is making less and less sense as I look into it. Does this company expect us to believe that Houston's unemployment rate is so low there are no workers available?

I was looking in the wrong place for this town believing it to be in the middle of nowhere.

Vidor's reputation (whether right, wrong, or outdated) in Texas is not to be underestimated.

Vidor is the Texas Klan's headquarters.

What does Houston have to do with it?

Vidor is at least a hundred miles from Houston.

Plus, every Texan knows about Vidor and the Klan.

Is that the town where Johnny Byrd was dragged to death by his "friends"?

That would be Jasper, TX (about 45 minutes north of Vidor).

The map shows it to be about 35 miles. But yahoo has it about 92.

My point was that it is not some tiny town in an unpopulated area.

........My brother was in Florida and Louisiana 5 months ago and he said it seemed like most of the contractors wanted illegals and in fact many contractors brought them with them to start reconstruction ........

I don't know about the rest of the country but i just moved from Southwest Florida.

I can tell you why the dry wallers and framers are illegals..... cause most (sorry for the broad brush) of the locals that were hired by my friend a subcontractor, showed up drunk, stoned or developed "workers comp" back pain...so he hired a couple of guys from the labor pool. they did their job, worked their asses off and never complained.

They might have gotten drunk on Friday after work, they might have been "illegals" but he basically didn't have to worry about them doing the job. He ended up paying them the "going rate" for starters and kept the best workers from the labor pool as permanent workers.

I think there are a lot of "jobs" but the quality of some of the workers is lacking. If you look around you'll see that some of the low paying jobs are filled by undereducated college grads, high school kids or just people with poor work skills.

I have worked in the civilian sector in several jobs and have never seen the "best" employee fired. There is always room for hard workers. Usually the best workers move on or move up the ladder, cause it's rare to find somebody that will work and won't complain all the time.

Yup and there is no school for it, almost all OJT to learn it. That is allmost. You can go to pipefitter school but I know of not one for boilermaker.
