ANDERSON, Ind. -- A teenager was being held after he was charged with raping a comatose 92-year-old woman in a city hospital hours before she died.
Derek D. Hutchison, 18, of Anderson, was being held in Madison County Jail on $100,000 bond Saturday.
Hutchison, who has a 5th-grade education, was arraigned Friday in video court. If convicted of the rape charge, he could face six to 20 years in prison.
Anderson police said Hutchison acknowledged "taking advantage" of the woman while she was lying in her bed at St. Johns Medical Center about 16 hours before her death in mid-February.
Her body was exhumed in March after the woman's niece gave permission. The filing of charges was delayed by various tests and additional investigation, authorities said.
"They very methodically planned out their investigation that led to this charge," Anderson Police Detective Joel Sandefur said.
Hutchison was arrested Feb. 15 on charges that he fondled another female patient in her room while visiting the hospital before police officers reported catching him inside a basement office. He has denied that charge.
He is also accused of a burglary and theft at the hospital.
Flay him then hang hang him.
He's a natural.
There are crimes and then there are ... "ewwww ..."
... I'm not even reading the rest. too creepy.
Maybe he can get Michael Schiavo's endorsement.
He's clearly a predator and needs to be locked up but he'll get a lawyer who will try to get him out of this.
The rape may have even hastened the elderly woman's death.
Good one. I mean she was useless flesh, so why bother charging him???? sarcasm off///
However, this is a tragic story and it seems like this individual may have some mental problems, and for the safety of himself and others should probably be locked up.
