Is There a Virus Threat for Macs?
The Wall Street Journal ^ | May 11, 2006 | Walter S. Mossberg

Posted on 05/11/2006 1:24:06 PM PDT by quidnunc

There's no other major item most of us own that is as confusing, unpredictable and unreliable as our personal computers. Everybody has questions about them, and we aim to help.

Here are a few questions about computers I've received recently from people like you, and my answers. I have edited and restated the questions a bit, for readability. This week my mailbox contained a question about security software for Macs.

If you have a question, send it to me at mossberg@wsj.com, and I may select it to be answered here in Mossberg's Mailbox.

Q: There's been a lot of press lately about increased virus activity on the Macintosh platform. Should Mac owners now be running the same kinds of security software that Windows owners use?

A: There is no sudden security crisis on the Apple Macintosh platform. In fact, for average Mac users, there isn't a security threat of any significance, at least not yet. It is laughable to compare the real, massive and burdensome security problems on Windows with the largely theoretical security problem on the Mac.

As I have said in the past, no operating system is invulnerable to attack, including Apple's Mac OS X operating system, which powers Macintosh computers. It is possible to write malicious software for the Mac, including viruses and spyware, and it is possible for this software to spread in the wild, infecting many Macs.

I have never had problems with viruses, only Mactards that think they are safe are the one who have problems.

BTW, reason why it hasn't been ported to the mac is because it would run on over 90% of them.

You were aware that Microsoft used the Mac to develop their game system and write many of the games?

I dont care about MS, I'm suing Linux right now.

It may come as a shock to you that there are people out there who use their computers to PRODUCE something.

LOL! And what can an Apple produce that a PC cant? sheesh. PC's can do everything and play games too.

The only OS I'm actually enamoured with is Linux, and in particular the Ubuntu variant.

What I find amazing is that I use Linux on my oldest computer - yet thanks to Linux it runs faster than the others (they are on Windows XP). This 2 1/2 year old laptop is even faster than my mother's 15in Powerbook on OS X.

I am waiting for more of my games to run on Crossover Office or Wine, and then I'll move all my computers over to Ubuntu.

Regards, Ivan

Linux really needs adobe to port photoshop to linux. Gimp sucks hardcore and running photoshop through wine stinks. "Pixel Image Editor" here has promise, but its a one man show and he needs a team to support him. Also its not free, but thats ok... $32 for a photoshop clone... that can be used on multiple platforms... not bad...

That's really all I need - I've thought about trying to use Macromedia Fireworks through Wine or Crossover Office, but what I've seen so far doesn't suggest it's a viable prospect.

Right.

Destructive OS X malware spies on Apple users

Macs' Virus Profile Rising

Apple releases Security Update, QuickTime 7.1, Front Row

Macs are more secure because they are so few and far between on the net. Same reason Firefox is so "secure", because it is (or was) so obscure. That is changing now and there have been security patches for Firefox as well.

Show us your score

OK, I ran it on my linux laptop. What is it supposed to tell me? I got a time and a checksum, and all it tells me is that the checksum was validated.
