Red Sox v Yankees--The Holy War Continues
05/09/06 | misterrob

Posted on 05/09/2006 4:03:54 PM PDT by misterrob

The saga continues in the Bronx this week. The Sox send out Beckett, Wakefield and Schilling. The Yankees counter with Randy Johnson, Mike Mussina and Shawn Chacon.

The New York Post ran a back cover story questioning why anyone has not dared to throw at David Ortiz.. (maybe because he is 6' 4" and weighs 250 lbs) Sox offseason pickup Josh Beckett returns to Yankee Stadium for the first time since Game 6 of the 2003 World Series.

Series returns to NY after an abbreviated series last week in Boston where Boston fans expressed their true feelings about Johnny Damon.

Sox 4-1 vs. Yanks this year...last year wasn't it a situation of Sox tied Yanks at end of reg. season but it was head-to-head record (Yanks had more wins vs. Sox) that decided
who won the division?

Yep. Identical 95-67 records. The Red Sox finished 9-10 versus the Yanks.

series record (cumulative)
1-2 @ NYY (1-2)
2-1 vs. NYY (3-3)
2-1 @ NYY (5-4)
1-3 vs. NYY (6-7)
1-2 @ NYY (7-9)
2-1 vs. NYY (9-10)

As you can see, neither team put any distance between the other, which is why the division was won in Game 2 of the final series when Wake was horrible (12.60 ERA!).

Friday's night's win against the unit and the Yankees was one of the BEST wins by my Metsies in years..Saturday's loss, blowing Pedro's gem, with Wagner imploding, was the worse loss since the 2000 WS..all in the span of 18 hours...

Wake has a checkered history with that team. There were the games in the 2003 ALCS where he pitched brilliantly as well as other games in 2003-06 where he was serving up BP. The best ever was the 1-0 loss to the Wankees vs RJ in Yankee Stadium last year. He gave up a cheap fly ball homer to Juice Boy but otherwise owned them to the tune of what, 11-12Ks?

That was a pitching masterpiece by both guys that day.

During game 7, Juicezombi hit two solo homers off Pedro.

Poor Grady.....

I just hope they take care of business when they head across town to Yankee Stadium. We'll seek to do our part for you when we face the Braves. Then, we'll just cheer for no injuries when Petey and Glavine come to town!

And he stole an AL MVP trophy from Frank Thomas in 2000.

He hit 2 Pedro change ups out of the park. One that could easily been influenced by juice that barely cleared the park.

That said, he knew that Pedro couldn't get his fastball over for a strike that day and so he just sat back and waited on the change, Giambi is as good as Bonds for knowing the strike zone and his plate discipline is remarkable. It's really too bad that he felt he needed to cheat because he was certainly a good enough hitter to be successful. However, since baseball didn't care about performance enhancing substances and players were rewarded with big money for cheating I suppose it makes sense that he took the easy way.

$120 million is a lot of coin....

Grady took a lot of heat for sticking with Pedro.

A guy who made over $15 million that year should be able to close the deal. If your superstar says that he can do it do you go with him or a guy from the bullpen? If Little had brought in Matsui and he yanked a double off of Embry then what would people be saying?

I know what you are saying...Pedro pitched a great game up until the 7th inning. Grady takes a lot of heat for stickin with Pedro, but there is rarely any discussion about juicezombi's "balcoization" of the game

That issue never seems to get mentioned. Hey, Grady didn't hang the change ups over the plate and he didn't leave men on base the whole game like the players did. They got shut down for what, 8 innings that game?

Yeah, saw Damons's cheap homer and the Sox knock the ball all over the park but no runs.

Wright has a cloud over him with all of the times he gets hit.

The team that scores first loses in this seasons rivalry.

Good defense by Sox in the 2nd inning.

Yank-mes will continue to choke. Their fans can cry all they want at that GHETTO stadium of their's, but its a fact.
