DURHAM, N.C. - Mike Nifong emerged from his first campaign for public office with a victory and a confident smile, saying he was eager to get back to running the district attorney's office.

He also spent plenty of time during the campaign shunning questions from reporters about the rape investigation against two members of the Duke University men's lacrosse team.

It's a task he'll have to get used to considering the long road ahead.

Nifong said he doesn't expect the case to come to trial before next spring, setting up an intense and lengthy standoff between sides that have refused to budge

In the meantime these boys lives are on hold while the stripper will continue as a victim with her free ride thru school. Sickening.

Well now that was an "in your face" act. What happened to speedy trial?

My understanding is that the defense can move for a speedy trial. The talking heads on both sides agreed that it was highly unusual for a prosecutor to delay taking a rape case to trial. It's usually the defense that wants to delay.

Sickening.

It sure is.

Yes it was. That fool of a DA is treating this case like a sports event, and these kinds of statements are the equivalent of pre-fight trash talk.

...until after the general election in November to be sure. He doesn't want his head handed to him by the defense till he gets his 4 year term started.

I'm not sure if he runs unopposed, or if there is a token GOP opponent, but everything I've read says that the winner of the Dem primary will win the November election.

I think he's got himself in a mess, and is hoping something happens to get him out of it.

FYI to all on this thread: Here's a summary of one of the problems with the DA's case (from another FR thread)

I hope this type of behavior is brought up in the general election. He is violating the Constitution by delaying the trial. I think he knows he doesn't have a case.

This case will go away with a whimper. The media doesn't like it when the "victim" is a perp. Remember the 13 year-old girl and her boyfriend who killed her parents? Everyone thought the girl was kidnapped and the story was on all the time. Well, when it began to look like the girl was complicit in the killings, the story disappeared. It'll b the same here. The stories are already drying up.

It's awful to feel that way, isn't it? LOL.

I mean, I love all these people, but.....I need my own time!

And we seem to be halfway to EVERYWHERE.

There's a fresh "wave" coming in June using us as a "base"..............for two weeks!

I'm putting my foot down this time.

If the community is, indeed, 45% black (from what the media tells us), then winning the Rat primary is tantamount to winning the general election. I think Nifong realizes he doesn't really have a case and is going to let it linger for months and then have it quietly disappear by dropping the charges.

That's essentially what happened in the Limbaugh case. You have the DA going out on a limb where he can't win the case so he lets it drag on for years until letting it drop (not quietly because, after all, it's Rush Limbaugh) at a point where he gets no political backlash.

I have this awful feeling that the people who put him in office are going to demand their "due."

It's almost like it's out of his own control.

And they want heads on stakes, from what I can see.
