DURHAM, N.C. - Mike Nifong emerged from his first campaign for public office with a victory and a confident smile, saying he was eager to get back to running the district attorney's office.
He also spent plenty of time during the campaign shunning questions from reporters about the rape investigation against two members of the Duke University men's lacrosse team.
It's a task he'll have to get used to considering the long road ahead.
Nifong said he doesn't expect the case to come to trial before next spring, setting up an intense and lengthy standoff between sides that have refused to budge

And it seems that UNC's lax team has behavior problems of its own.

I don't think it matters much whether the females in the poll were good looking or not.
They've just yet re-established for me that some women in this country think with their genitals, and have sex with their brains...
I hope they stand fast. I pray for them and their families constantly. This is exactly what the D.A. is hoping for. The boys will be in limbo, young, wanting to get on with their lives, and the police and D.A. will capitalize on that and offer a lessor offence to just get this out of the way a win/win situation for the D.A. Please, God, don't let them give in, but it is very, very hard to wait for years for this to be tried and get it over. Two years to a 20 year-old is a lifetime, and all they want is to have the same life their friends are having. It's easy to pressure them. I hope their attorneys and parents will stand fast.
And I know, that there but for the Grace of G-d, it could have been our family.
ABC11 just reported that they have received email from Wade Smith and another attorney saying that this report proves that the accuser had several different "versions" of her story -- and Duke is saying they relied too heavily on the DPD that the victim kept changing her story and was not credible.
DPD questioned her credibility from the start, so says Dan Abrams.
I'm confused. Is Duke University personnel saying they relied too heavily on the Durham Police Department?
Oooh - I just turned on Abrams. Most excellent reporting!
Yes. Evidently Duke never saw a police report and they only had information from the DPD, who evidently questioned her story and credibility from the very beginning.
At least that's why Duke is saying they acted so slowly (which I thought they acted too swiftly)!

Report: Police Said LAX Accuser Was Not Credible

Well, that proves nothing as far as Nifong is concerned. If the accuser had several different versions, he chose the one he liked best. It's what any political hack would do. And the lack of DNA tying anyone to the "crime" and the possibility of a wrongful arrest as the result of a rigged line-up shouldn't slow him down ONE DANGED BIT! No siree!
OMG. Now the cops have turned on the DA it sounds like. I'm sick I missed most of this Abrams report.
Duke has really mishandled this from the very start and I'd be pretty ticked off if I was paying $40K to send my kid there.
Yale: This young man voluntarily cooperated and gave a non-represented that yes, I had this party and had under age drinking. The court has better things to do than prosecute kids for open container drinking violations. Nifong can't get anyone so he's going after this kid.
What do you mean, the cops have turned on the DA? What did I miss?
I guess we now know why it took 2 days to get a search warrant, huh? She needed time to settle on a story.
My gosh, have we heard one thing that goes in her favor in this story? One? Anybody?
If the cops think the stripper is unreliable and has changed her story, which it sounds like Abrams was just finishing saying as I turned the television on, then they aren't likely to be terribly helpful to Nifong as he proceeds with this case. They'll probably let him use his own investigators.
What cop wants to get bloodied in court iwth defense attoreys and a bogus case.
I'll boldly make the call here. There won't be a trial, and at some point, the DA will fold his tent and slink off. And it will probably be because the "victim" doesn't want to go through the emotional trauma of a trial, or some such nonsense.
That's a moving timeline and certainly doesn't square with the neighbor's account or the player's pictures.
