Word For The Day, Thursday, May 4, 2006 - adduce
dictionaries ad nauseum, internet | May 4, 2006 | secret garden

Posted on 05/04/2006 4:49:25 AM PDT by secret garden

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

adduce • \uh-DOOSS\ • verb
: to offer as example, reason, or proof in discussion or analysis

Example sentence:
"Leon has made some pretty strong accusations here tonight," said Tim, "but he has adduced no convincing evidence in support of them."

Etymology:
We won't lead you astray over the history of "adduce"; it is one of a plethora of familiar words that trace to the Latin root "ducere," which means "to lead." Perhaps we can induce you to deduce a few other "ducere" offspring if we offer a few hints about them. One is another term for kidnapping, one's a title for a British royal, and one's a process of abridging or consolidating something. Give up? They are "abduct," "duke," and "reduce," respectively. There are also many others, including "induce," which means "to persuade" or "to bring about."

Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.

The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

Patrick Kennedy was on a trip
he drove his car into a blocker
The police said, when Patrick got out
of the car he staggered
And said, he was a Congressman and was
late for a vote.

The time frame was after 2 AM in the morning.
Can we deduce young Patrick was drunk as a goose
why then did the cops drive him home??

If he was driven home we have to conclude
he adduced - he was on his way to vote
meant nothing and he is sandbagging his way
around like his dad, Senator Ted Kennedy.

That's what the outfit CSIS, mentioned in the article, is supposed to be doing. It was made up of mostly ex-cops and ex-Mounties, etc., and was fairly secretive. An old college buddy of mine was the first boss of it back in the 80's. Howard, his wife, and I spent a long weekend once with his wife and him in Ottawa and he had to take a couple of mysterious phone calls in the middle of Saturday night. :^) (It was May or June 1986 - I remember because the Canadiens beat Calgary for the Stanley Cup that weekend.) He wanted the outfit to be more effectual than it was, but other than that wouldn't discuss it much.
