Vanity: DVD Player / burner help
May 3, 2006 | don-o

I do believe my DVD player that came wirh my Dell is fried. So, I am looking to replace it with a player / burner.

I am looking on the net, of course; but, the knowledge here cuts through the fog. Helpful Freepers have hand held me through a couple of major (for me) computer exploits, including installing a second HD.

Looking for recommendations on what to buy. When I make the buy, I'll probably need some more hand holding for the install.

My NEC DVD Burner has faired a lot better then my Sony. It was OEM, so it was cheaper.

My Dell DVD burner also died. I called their help desk and got a new one at no cost. Real easy to install as well.

My player is well out of warranty. I want to go ahead and upgrade with a burner.

Thanks for the reply, Ben

Get a firewire or USB external so you can transfer between machines or take on trips.

Didn't even know that Samsung made DVD drives.

Good suggestion. That would be a good thing to have in my situation. Thanks for that, doodad.

My pleasure. I really have found that with five or more machines in the house and the parent/brother machines to service that external really is the way to go for as much as possible. It also means that the micro boxes like the Shuttle type are realistic space savers.

Is that a brand name? Do you use it?

I don't know about brand loyalty, but make sure you get one that has "Dual Layer DVD +/- R/RW"

I just installed a Lite-On 1635S - 16x sopeed dvd burner. Excellent. I had used a Lite-On 1633 for over a year and never had a problem with it. Both were very easy to install. Pick it up for $50-60 bucks at Circuit City or OfficeMax.

It's a lightscribe drive. I've bought any number of them and you can make pretty pictures on the front of the DVDs if you choose.

I second the Lite-On recommendation. I just got one a couple months ago (A dual-layer burner) and it works great, with no issues at all.
