My NEC DVD Burner has faired a lot better then my Sony. It was OEM, so it was cheaper.

My Dell DVD burner also died. I called their help desk and got a new one at no cost. Real easy to install as well.

Get a firewire or USB external so you can transfer between machines or take on trips.

I don't know about brand loyalty, but make sure you get one that has "Dual Layer DVD +/- R/RW"

I just installed a Lite-On 1635S - 16x sopeed dvd burner. Excellent. I had used a Lite-On 1633 for over a year and never had a problem with it. Both were very easy to install. Pick it up for $50-60 bucks at Circuit City or OfficeMax.

It's a lightscribe drive. I've bought any number of them and you can make pretty pictures on the front of the DVDs if you choose.
