We've spent more than $100 billion in Americans' hard earned money so Iraq can make Islam its "official religion." Another federal government boondoggle - - wasting my tax dollars as surely as all the spending to "rebuild" New Orleans and the Medicaire monstrosity and all the other spending binges.
As avacado pointed out, the amount of money to pay for the war is still miniscule compared to the cost most left-wing domestic programs. Welfare, social security, New Orleans and Medicaire, as you also pointed out.
While Islam is still "the official state religion," I think that may be mostly symbolic. The Iraqi Constitution does not give the government authority to infringe upon the beliefs of individuals, meaning the government itself still has secularist leanings. In any event, the Iraqi government itself is INFINITELY better than what will happen if the Islamists, Wahhabbists, and Mujahideens that we are currently fighting take over the country. It is also far better than Saddam's regime...he was persecuting and slaughtering Iraqi Christians and Jews very badly.
Iraqi Christians are mostly Chaldean Catholics, as well as Nestorian Syrians, but altogether they form about 3% of the overall population. Their numbers have been dwindling since the 1980s mostly because of poverty levels (which I'm sure Saddam's own needless war with Kuwait mostly created) and persecution from the regime.
Kuwait=Iran, my bad.
