MLB screwing their fans

Posted on 05/01/2006 5:43:04 PM PDT by frankiep

I've have just about had it with the way that MLB treats its fans. I live in Charlotte, NC. I paid $130 to get MLB Extra Innings on cable, and I am also paying about $20 a month to have access to live games on the internet. So, tonight I have a pizza in front of me and I'm drinking a beer and I'm getting ready to watch the Mets play the Nationals. But, I can't, because it's blacked out because Washington (along with Florida, Baltimore, and Atlanta) are considered local teams in Charlotte. This would be understandable if the game was available on a local channel, but we do not get local Washington DC channels in Charlotte.

So basically, I'm shelling out $120 for the season, plus an additional $20 a month only to have about 8 teams every night blacked out. Has anyone else run into this problem? I have called Time Warner, In Demand, and MLB, and each one says that it is the doing of the other guy. I am so freaking mad right now.

FREE TO AIR satellite stuff.

In theory, you could point a dish at the east through west coast satellites and pick up all the public air wave stuff from various states.

Takes some education in that area, but sounds like you would benefit.

I have MLB Extra Innings and live in Las Vegas. I get all the Yankee games I want for the package deal of about $ 150. Good deal.

In any event, the Yanks-BoSox game is on ESPN, tied 3-3.

I've been seriously considering switching to directtv, and not just because of this stuff.

directv is great. I don't watch much baseball, but their football package is great. No blackouts.

I had NFL Sunday ticket and they did the same thing, relegating me to poor quality network tv reception, or no game at all because of the blackouts. So I appropriately cancelled my NFL Sunday Ticket subscription and saved $180.
I live in the middle of Missouri so both KC and St Louis were considered local games if they were at home.

Ehhhh....We're OK.

Other than pitching, hitting and fielding, we're a house-a-fire!

I'm missing a Tiger game due to the Redwings and I couldn't care less about hockey.

Red Wings lead after one period, 1-0. I'm pulling for Edmonton.

Give me a break. You bitch about a team that has won their championship more recently, and is in the playoffs. The Tigers are going nowhere. And it's May 1. Get a grip.

My wife got me MLBTV again this year. I live in Ormond Beach Fla, next to Daytona Beach.

Miami is 254 miles away, yet I can't get any Marlin's games because MLB says I'm in their "local area Blackout".

I'm a DIE HARD St.Louis Cardinal fan, but won't be able to watch them play in Miami.

St.Pete-Tampa is 130 miles away, yet I can't watch any Devil Rays home games either.

In a perfect world, the MLB idiot who designed these "blackout areas", would have to spend at least half his annual salary to have someone pre-taste his food and drink, anfd hire someone to start his car....

Get rid of your cable and get Direct TV

I agree with Sparky. Find a friend with Direct TV with the sports package and see what they say about it. They are not owned by T.W. Once you see what all is on satellite you'll be happy to dump cable and save a few bucks for more channels. I wouldn't take cable TV if they gave it to me free. BTW I think Charlotte has local stations service on your networks also if not try Dishnet. Another good idea. Deal with THEIR web site and not dealers. You'll likely do better on promotions.

Do you know how the baseball package is on directv? I'm a huge baseball junkie and I can tell I'm going to be really pissed if I can't see a quarter of the Mets games, especially since I'm paying through the nose for them.

Well I have the MLB audio. You can listen to anything plus you get 3 months free of Sports Illustrated.

DirecTV is a bit different, it's harder to black out the games because your local TV market would be confined to Charlotte. That said, you could ALSO pick up the Sports Package and get all of the FSNs, YES, NESN and Comcast stations that carry most of the baseball games within those markets.

I had MLB extra innings a couple of years ago and of course the braves games would be blacked out here (Atlanta) but usually Turnersouth or FSN or TBS was broadcasting it. I love MLB Extra Innings when I had it but I think I gained about 20 pounds because all I did was watch baseball. LOL!

I'm sorry, I don't. I watch maybe five Rangers' games a year, and the playoffs and World Series.

Check directv.com. They've got all the packages laid out.

I just look at my box. It's blacked out on some stations butMBL on Direct 741 shows it being there and does not give me a not aviable in this area like a couple of other channels do. My guess is Time Warner didn't pony up enough to MLB. Sorry I can't confirm a visual on the game for you though. I don't have sports packages on my satellite. My guess is it would show up on Direct TV on at least one of the MLB channels.

Good :)

I love my DirecTV even though sometimes they can't figure out that we've paid the bill on time, but that's quickly sorted out.

I've never had TW so I couldn't tell ya.....

NFL Sunday Ticket is freakin awesome by the way.
