Owning pets could become a thing of the past in Silicon Valley.
No, cats and dogs aren't being banished from the California high-tech haven. But Santa Clara County, Calif., officials are considering an upgrade in the status of pet owners.
The animal lovers would be pet guardians, not merely owners. The county Board of Supervisors is scheduled to vote on the issue Tuesday.
Officials saying being called a pet guardian should get people to be more responsible with their furry friends. The measure would change all references in county legal documents, but would not change any of the owners' responsibilities.
San Francisco, Berkeley, and the State of Rhode Island have passed similar laws.
When do they pass a law allowing pets to vote?
I am so happy to see this civil rights movement on behalf of animals everywhere. They are Free! They are Free! Thank God almighty! The pets are free!

It may sound like mere semantics, but beware the average citizen when semantics are used in the legal world.
As guardians, can we deduct the little dependents from our taxes?
My cat is 19, but I'm pretty sure he's registered democrat in some county somewhere...
As a "pet guardian" I just spent $3,500 on surgery for a lop eared rabbit that was given to me.
Now, as a "guardian", to whom do I send the bill???

More communities are considering restrictions on high risk dog breeds(ie Pit Bulls), and the breed activists are fighting them by pursuing the civil rights angle. By elevating the status of a pet, such bans become a PC civil rights issue. Breedism=Racism.

You spent $3,500 on a freakin' rabbit? I would have skinned it and tossed it in a pot and just buy another one for $5.
