Lacrosse players face old charges (Nifong retaliates against Duke Lax)
News & Observer ^ | April 25, 2006 | Benjamin Niolet and Joseph Neff

Posted on 04/25/2006 2:34:48 AM PDT by abb

DURHAM - District Attorney Mike Nifong plans to reinstate misdemeanor charges against a half-dozen Duke lacrosse players, saying a March 13 party where a woman reported a rape broke the deals that the players made with prosecutors.

Nifong's decision could affect players who, before the party, had entered agreements in which prosecutors would dismiss the cases if the players performed community service and stayed out of trouble for six months or a year. Among the first to have his charges reinstated was David Evans, one of the team captains who lived at 610 N. Buchanan Blvd., the site of the party in which lacrosse players hired two women from escort services to dance. One of the women told police that she was raped by three men in a bathroom.

Two players, Collin Finnerty, 19, and Reade William Seligmann, 20, were charged last week with first-degree rape, first-degree sex offense and first-degree kidnapping. Their attorneys say the men are innocent.

On Monday, an attorney for Seligmann filed a motion seeking information that would help attack the credibility of the woman, the only person, according to the defense filing, who says a rape occurred. The motion seeks information about the woman, including criminal charges, mental and emotional problems the woman has suffered as well as social services, probation, child protective services and victim's advocacy records.

Today, Finnerty is due in a Washington court where prosecutors in an assault charge are considering whether to revoke a deferred prosecution agreement similar to those affecting other players in Durham.

According to court records, 16 players were charged in the past three years with misdemeanor charges in Durham including noise violations, public urination and alcohol violations. The deals placed the men on probation for either six months or a year.

Nancy Grace is just a former prosecutor who has decided while one that prosecurtors were supreme beings and were infalible. That of course makes one into a fascist.

It is not all that surprising in a way. Anyone who has been a victim of a crime terrrible tends to see more rumor for collective, ie state action. Just as anyone who has been victim of a DA become more libertarian.

Once upon a time I felt sympathy for Grace after I learned about her fiance, but that has been sometime ago. It must be hell being like that or perhaps she just does not realize how venemous, evil and angry a woman she displays herself as.

If she is under a psychologist's care, perhaps she might think about finding a new one.

Its just so devil-awful to endure to see someone in her state.

It makes one want to start tearing at their own flesh.

I think we are being told that the AV comes from a prominent family-U.S. Senate???

Maybe that's why she only received a slap on the hand for her taxi incident?

Could also explain why Nifong is so gung-Ho about this prosecution???

I thought Mangum was Crystal's married name, and McNeil is her maiden name?

I have read that dear Nancy has embellished the circumstances surrounding her fiancee's murder to make it more poignant.

I wont watch her. I on rare occassion see her flipping through the channels but I will not stay on it.

I have sympathy for her too. I will say it was a terrible thing when she was a prosecutor and could let her biases really harm people. It is much better for the American justice system that she was presentable enough that CourTV snatched her up and put he in a position where her biases are basically harmless.

I mentioned this early on in this case.

About 2 or 3 weeks ago.

About all the Mangums in Durham, NC. I was puzzled by it.

There are companies, streets, an Assistant DA with the name of Mangum in Durham.

gung-Ho, LOL

The poster appears to say there are some connections, (geneology, *police*, *prostitution*, *Durham*, 1800's senator, *Grandad*, election endorsements, AV's arrest, Gamma Beta, and the DNA poem) ... not sure I want to waste time on it, but it's damn interesting.

OBSERVER EXCLUSIVE
Bid saving N.C. millions rejected
Firm that helped form system used in awarding contract had close ties to eventual winner Office Depot

(middle of the article)
Pennies and pencils

The lawsuit started over price.

The companies bid on providing three categories of supplies. If Corporate Express delivered all three, its price was $37,000 less than Office Depot per year.

The contract is for three years and renewable for another three, so over six years Corporate Express was $222,000 less.

State officials, though, could have split the contract, letting Corporate Express provide two categories of supplies and Office Depot provide the third category, in which they were cheaper. That would save $1.8 million a year, or $10.8 million over six years.

The state "has never awarded a state contract based on price alone," State Purchasing Officer Mike Mangum said in a deposition. "There are always bid specifications, criteria and requirements that a bidder/offerer must meet."

In a July 2005 meeting of state purchasing agents, however, state officials outlined the project's three main objectives, including: "Develop a new state term contract that enables the reliable delivery of office supplies to state entities at the lowest total cost."

Mangum said in his deposition that last year's 11 office supply bids were the first time his office used a point system to rank bidders. A bidder could earn up to 1,000 points, 750 of which were based on price. Non-price factors, such as customer service and catalogs, determined the other 250 points.

Corporate Express won the price section of the evaluation, but lost the nonprice comparison.

Office Depot won the overall evaluation by 19 points, receiving 18 because it has retail stores where state employees could buy supplies. Corporate Express has no stores, getting zero points in that category.

Is Mike Magnum white or black, does anyone know? His age?

I have read that dear Nancy has embellished the circumstances surrounding her fiancee's murder to make it more poignant.

Well what she has accomplished is to make herself appear more poignant (keenly distressing to the mind or feelings of the viewers).

Is the DNA that xoxoxox aludes to is actually a DNA tie between the 1800s senator and the AV's ex-husband?
