Duke Lacrosse Scandal Sheds New Light on the Stripper Industry: A Campus Trend?
ABC News ^ | 04/24/06 | staff

April 24, 2006 — A Duke University student and lacrosse team captain calls Allure Escort Service to order two strippers. He says it's for a bachelor party, but the dancers arrive to a gathering of college boys, many drinking and some underage.

Is this just your average Monday night at college?

ABC News spoke with students and recent college graduates from around the country. All of them wanted to speak anonymously given the delicate nature of the topic, and all said the same thing: They had seen strippers at parties on or near campus, often at fraternity and athletic team parties celebrating birthdays or new pledges.

I think there is a question as to if they were stippers or escorts?

Didn't someone call an escort service?

What's the difference? $20.00 in New Orleans.

Don't think it's worth prison, though.

They should ask for their money back. They asked for strippers and got "exotic dancers" (at least as the media calls them).

Whether the accused and "the second dancer" (as she has come to be known) are "strippers" is the elephant in the living room.

How odd that the Duke boys paid $800 collectively to ogle a couple of strippers (what, they don't have "gentleman's clubs" in Durham)?

And how odd that the Duke boys called an escort service to hire these two "strippers".

No one is willing to say that the two strippers were in fact call girls, because that opens up some disturbing ramifications. That the Duke boys in fact had sex with the accuser (and possibly "the second dancer"). That the sex was simply what the accuser and "the second dancer" were selling and what the Duke boys were buying. That the evidence of rough sexual activity found by the nurse at Duke hospital was the, um, expected result of the transaction, or perhaps the result of one of numerous prior transactions that the accused engaged in before arriving at the Duke party around midnight. Etc., etc.

Heaven forbid we should actually ask these questions. Better to pretend that $800 is the going price for a couple of "exotic dancers".

Oops. That should have been "whether the accuser and the second dancer . . . "

If you look in the Durham phone book online, you cannot find strippers, just escorts.

The descriptions of the photos by reporters who have seen them include a couple where one dancer is on top of the other, and vice versa.

It appears that the strippers were not merely stripping, but were having sex with each other (or at least beginning to, when the strippers called off the show). So your point that $800 seems high for 2 hours of mere stripping may be valid, but on the other hand the high cost may be because the two women had promised to engage with sex with each other as part of the routine.

I don't know why these guys had to get gutter lap dancers and not ones from a higher class establishment if they were going to do that at all.

They were for sure stuck on stupid.
For sure they were setting themselves up for disaster.

Justoneminute blog's Tom McGuire has received information that would indicate, although not official, the players were mad when african-american women were sent.

I think they card people at strip clubs so the underage team members would not be able to go. This is why they hired the strippers and not because they wanted to have sex.

Rough sex with neither the players' DNA left behind, nor traces of a condom?

The players have not changed their story, and every piece of evidence that we know about backs their version. This is really very simple. The Duke players are telling the truth, and the strippers are lying.

"I think they card people at strip clubs so the underage team members would not be able to go."

A fair point, they also probably wanted to get drunk as skunks, and that leaves the problem of how to get home afterward.

If you read the whole article it is pretty disturbing, at least I found it so.

Disturbing? The womens' addiction to it? Or, rather, their addiction to the money they can make?

OTOH, I know a number of firemen who are addicted to their jobs, too. They, however, do put their lives on the line usually to rescue other people, and to preserve the property of others.

Firemen don't usually clear a $2-300 bucks for an hour and half's work. And weird? They don't usually complain, either. Not about the risks, the hazards, or that they love their work.

The drug use, and the casual mention of it, disturbed me. I especially liked how the writer said the two featured strippers had used drugs, but it was "a long time ago". These women are so young that nothing in their post-childhood lives happened "a long time ago". Then she (I think the author was a she, but I might be wrong) blithely went on to say that another of the strippers they worked with did so to "support her heroin" use.

And, you know, these women aren't even "strippers" or "exotic" dancers, they're nude dancers, or most likely topless dancers. A much lower skill set than a real stripper or a belly dancer.

That's not an environment I'd want my daughter in, nor are these the type of people I'd want my son "hiring" or associating with in any way. I don't care HOW much money they make.

The breezy, devil-may-care, tone of the article is what really disturbed me. I don't THINK that most colleges have become dens of porn and iniquity, but this article made is sound like it was OK if they have.

Strippers do not show up to a house without a male bodygaurd.

What a thoughtful post you've written.

The left wishes to legalize prostitution. Some are even arguing for minimum wage laws.

San Francisco has a prostitute's union. Has been operative for a number of years.

This union got organized by a cab driver.

That cab driver was Willie Brown, as legend has it.

He was speaker in CA for 25 years. And then mayor of San Francisco. He was not re-elected (You KNow Who Got the Job) and because he had to make a choice: Support Gay Agenda or Support the Black Agenda. He chose the The Black Agenda.

Asidem stuff. Anyway..

The feminist movement is actually split about the issue of prostitudes, porn and nude dancers. One side rails: Objectification of Women! The other side rails 'Her Choice".

It's a headon, to see which side is more bullish than the other. The Side which will bring in the most money and power politics will win. Therefore, I say, those supporting women debasing themselves will win. It's a money maker for their candidates.
