Loose Python Caught Trying To Eat Duck On Long Island

NEW YORK -- A seven-foot-long python caused a scare in Lindenhurst, where she almost ate a duck in Firemen's Park. Then the huge snake put quite a fight while resisting capture at the hands of the Suffolk County police.

Officials at the Suffolk County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals said the young female python, about two to four years old, was resting comfortably Thursday at an undisclosed location.

The 80-pound snake will be evaluated this week by a herpetologist and will likely be adopted by a licensed, out-of-state wildlife rehabilitator.

The Burmese snake -- which normally makes its home in Thailand, Vietnam and Burma -- was dumped at Firemen's Park on Tuesday afternoon, where children saw it and called police. The SPCA said it's unclear who dumped the snake there.

Burmese pythons usually feast on rodents. They can grow as long as 17 to 18-feet-long and up to 200 pounds.

Before First Precinct police officers responded, the hungry python tried to grab a snack -- a duck out of the pond. Three police officers secured the snake before it could eat the duck.

New York State law bans private owners from keeping Burmese pythons without special permits.

There are plenty of these things loose in Florida. Why didn't they just do away the snake? I bet she'd made several pairs of boots.

Not very comfortably if they didn't give him his duck back!

Glad they caught it before it could eat someone's pet.

Why not let it eat the duck and catch it while digesting said duck -- snake will be slower and therefore easier to catch?

If... she weighs... the same as a duck ... she's made of wood.

Any chance of getting a couple of these on the ballot in Democrat strong holds?

I know a biologist that caught a 6 1/2' rattler this way and froze him for future research. He always said he would thaw him out one day and let him finish his lunch.

It is quite dangerous. One huge Burmese python was found dead in a national park, having tried to eat an alligator, and a creature that size could easily take on a person.
