The Hobbit Hole XXIX - Until the stars are all alight...

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Until the stars are all alight

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

Maybe you have to live in a tent in back...but at least it looks nice. And it saves on upkeep...

Any interest in a tame parakeet that may need a home? Sonya writes: "My mom and dad found a parakeet while visiting a friend. I guess it was flying around and my dad held out a cracker and the bird landed on his shoulder and ate the cracker. My mom took it home and put an add for lost and found pets on Tuesday. No calls yet."

I loved my parakeet I had, but I can't take it... Too many members of the food chain here. Probably the same for you, Rosie, unless your critters might be better about a bird. I know mine wouldn't. I know Gidget would try to kill it, and the cats too.

We were in the pet section at Walmart the other day. Luke kept asking for a hamster. I couldn't get him to understand why that would be a very, very, very bad idea.

I lost my parakeet, that we had in college, to a cat.

The bird was loose in the house all the time, would perch either in his cage up by the ceiling, or in a big plant I had, and when you walked around, he'd come land on your head.

Then we started feeding a stray cat, outside. Then my friend Paul ran over the cat, and it had a hurt leg so we brought it inside. Heh... it wasn't too hurt to catch the bird, though. The bird was pretty spry, but I think the cat got it flying at night. If he flew at night, he'd fly into the walls and hit the floor. It was a bad scene.

When my in-laws were up for my sister-in-law's wedding, Sister Mary Ham Burner brought her parakeet because she was afraid an ice storm at home would knock the power out and the bird would freeze. She had the cage on the chest in Jr's room.

We came home after the wedding on our way to another Christmas/New Year's event. Wife went in Jr's room and something flew by her head. Abby had managed to get up on the chest and push the birdcage off. Fortunately she didn't get the bird. He was perched on the wall and I put a handkerchief over him and got him back in the cage.

Curiously, that was the same night that, while we were out at the second event, four adults couldn't figure out how to unlock the back door (key is identical to the front). When Sam (new Christmas puppy at the time) had to go out, instead of just taking him out the front, they listened to 9-year-old Jr. who said "he has to go out the back door."

So they just let Sam pee on the carpet.

That's a study in our willingness to follow bad leadership, there. :~)

Let him 'hamster sit' for a friend sometime and have HIM do the cage cleaning. GAK, what a job!

Thankfully, while guinea pig sitting, then rabbit sitting, I discovered I was allergic to both. It was real, but also VEY convenient.

We almost always had parakeets and cats at the same time growing up, and if I only had Halvah to contend with, I'd say sure! Hang 'em high enough and usually cats eventually give up.

But I think Tam would kill it or go frantic trying...probably a bad idea. Considering he can jump onto the top of the fridge from floor level...I don't have a "high enough" to offer.

Heh. True.

Though... Of all the times I've been over to someone's house, who had a bird, I've never yet had the thought "gee, I'd like one of those".

But we've got some traveling to do. At least for a while...

My bird was fun, I liked having him. I just can't picture a time where I'll be able to have one again. Even without the threat from other pets, I wouldn't keep them caged all the time, and I like to have the door open.

Yeah - understood. Cisco would undoubtedly be interested too.

I just think it's pretty cool that it just landed on her dad outside.

Ramius won't let me have any pets. ;-)

He did offer to buy me one of these to keep me company when he's away though....

None of this is true of course, but it makes a funny story and gives me an excuse to post a picture of a dismembered torso pillow. hehehe...

I know I've mentioned it before, but if y'all are interested in good TV, check out The Unit. It's on Tuesday nights, we TiVo it. It is one fantabulous, hard-hitting look at Army life. They take a bit of dramatic license, but their portrayal of the lives of Army wives is dead-on. Fantastic.

OB and I have watched The Unit since the beginning, it is very good! Unfortunately, we just discovered NCIS, hope Gibbs(Mark Harmon) has not left the series for good :-(
