The Hobbit Hole XXIX - Until the stars are all alight...
http://freeper.the-hobbit-hole.net/ ^

Posted on 04/20/2006 2:10:46 PM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Until the stars are all alight

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

Question: Am I correct that the next book following Hitchhikers Guide is The Restaurant at the End of the Universe?

They're just slightly deranged looking.

Yeah, but being stuck with one staring at me for three days was disconcerting, to say the least. Also, the old lady who lived next door to my Granny, when I was about six, had a couple of Pekes. Mean, nasty little brutes they were, so I wasn't inclined to like the little creature to begin with. ;o)

Thanks. I'm currently re-reading The Two Towers and reading The Silver Chair to Luke. Also re-reading Philip Yancey's The Jesus I Never Knew.

But I was looking for someting ~mostly entertaining~.

Yeah, I think so too. But I just haven't put that much time and energy into my theory.

Even if you aren't entertained, it's at least mostly harmless.

I confess, I haven't read the books either...just heard the first part of the radio show. However, I believe that predates the books in any case.

*sigh*

Practically every time I post, the thread dies horribly. As if being stressed out about life in general wasn't enough.

In other news, we had a platter of fresh sliced squash, carrots and even a couple of sliced radishes with our supper last night...dipped it in blue cheese.

I can't wait till we start getting stuff out of thegarden. I have to get out there tomorrow and do a little work, but everything is in. Theboy's job is putting wood chips down all around the raised bed. We had a tree (right by the power poll) get hit bad by lightening, and the electric co. came and cut it down and chipped up the branches. I had them dump them by the garden...worked out great except that it fried out tv. We have a portable 8" one that we've been using...it's not a big deal because we don't watch a lot of television, but we'll get another one if this one can't be fixed...maybe after GGHDJ (Gnad gets his day job). :-)

That was a nice picture of you and Steve. Tell him hi for us and that we're excited for what the future holds.

They finish our barn tomorrow...we'll post pics.

Thenewboy turns 3 tomorrow...I can't believe it. I had my hair in curlers the other day and he said "You're pretty like a princess" I got a warm feeling deep inside and said "thank you...do princesses have pretty hair?" to which he said "no, it's yucky"...I guess maybe I shouldn't ask so many questions. :-)

Off to bed, Mrsnad

Just...stuff. Time of year, for one. And the fact that I'm really supposed to start earning my keep at work - i.e. getting enough billable hours from clients to pay my way, which would be about 40% of my time, and right now...about all I know how to do is PC stuff and there just isn't enough of that to cover that much of my time. And the fact that the internet policy there really means I shouldn't so much as check weather on-line, but I don't have stuff to do constantly, so I'm tempted all the time. It's either that or sit staring at nothing at this point - there are only so many manuals and such available to read. Also stressed because my boss is going on a fairly long leave in a few months and I'm supposed to be ready to stand in, but I'm *not* a network admin person really, don't understand stuff like VPN setup and router configuration, and he's not the greatest at teaching and I dunno the right questions to ask - about that or anything else.

So I'm just kinda feeling down and useless.

I'm supposed to pull 6 billable hours a day ... I average around 4.5. What counts as billable?

Hmmm ... does the internet policy allow for accessing work-related information? Like VPN instructionals and Cisco coding online?

A Cisco cert wouldn't hurt ya ...

Any service we provide to customers counts...but right now, as I said, all I know is PC stuff. We might get eight hours or so a week, if that.

Yeah, I could look at manuals on-line if I basically said what I was doing. Catch is I'm guessing most are above my head. I know basic network protocol stuff and how to set up networking on a computer, but that's it. I don't know where to start. I'm not a programmer, I'm not anything like that.

Sometimes I wonder why I'm in this business. I feel so stupid.

...Then there's a thing that happened today that shouldn't have shaken me up, but did...boss's four year old was supposed to bring a "letter box" to school (whatever that means), and his letter was "W". Boss showed me the graphic he helped put on it for him - a big W, and then a little picture of Bush in the bottom corner with the caption "Huh...I thought W started with D..." Um...how am I supposed to take that? I don't want to discuss politics at work, ya know? I didn't laugh...just didn't really comment.

Rosie, you're not stupid. Trust me, I know stupid, and you are NOT.

If there's no easy place for you there, make a place. I'm pretty much a workstation tech ... if it's a single-user system, I can probably tell you what's wrong with it, especially if it's a product of the Lazy E. But where I work now, servers make the (financial) rain fall, and though the company has strong ties to the Lazy E, that's not the only kind of computer we work with, not by a long shot.

So, I walked in and announced that I wanted to learn two new things every day. I don't, always, but I have learned all about Ghost, and managing Road Runner email accounts, and I can play around in Active Directory (oh, be afraid!). I have learned that Terminal Services exist (never used 'em before), and my next goal is to learn about Sybari, Postini, and Exchange Server ... at least enough to do simple things.

People love it when you express a lively interest in what happens. I'll bet anything that's exactly what you're doing, and your boss --- who hire dyou because of your background --- is likely certain that you'll fill his shoes admirably when he leaves.

... And once he does leave, you don't have to worry about his politics. Despite what Ann Coulter says, you can talk to liberals about all sorts of interesting things!

When does he leave, and for how long?
