Morning Bear and Rose: hope all went well with the move; we saw you had quite a weather day down there.
That GPS is really neat. And we can't show it so well, but it drew a little map of our whole route on the display. He was busy messing with it yesterday, setting waypoints at important places and road intersections.
I think it can lose signal when we go down into the lowland areas that are heavily treed. It didn't seem to lose signal at all on the trail yesterday that was up in the clearcut areas.
Our surveyors use them all the time, but they have a back pack receiver and hand held controls that look like something from StarTrek.
It has surprised me how much the simpler units have come down in price. Wouldn't replace my Silva Ranger compass for my field excursions, though, but it would be a cool supplement.
I'm being slowly but surely dragged grumbling and muttering into the ~ higher ~ technology age. sigh.
Well, the trouble with me is, a compass wouldn't do me a bit of good, because after a few loops and turns, I no longer know which direction 'camp' is. :~D I just have to stick to the trail and know where it's going.
I'm not well versed on the GPS unit, ecurbh is. But I'd like to be. What would be nice about it is if we have trouble and a horse or rider gets hurt, or if we come upon someone else up there who needs help, we can call someone and be able to give exact coordinates to where we are... OR, alternately, at least to the nearest intersection with a logging road, if we mark them with the numbers of all those logging roads. Without GPS, I'd just have to try to say "Well, we're on the Waddell Loop, about a ways past that turny part, before you get to that big white rock." Which isn't going to mean much to a guy on the phone.
I've got 18 more boxes done and ready to ship. Don't worry, most are small priority boxes (flat rate).
Sending you a FReepmail on the particulars of two of the boxes. :-)
I'm starting in on the kitchen stuff today. Have to do laundry after church... got my desk nearly cleaned out yesterday and most of the decorative stuff packed.
One week from now I'll be smoochmooting!
The precise location aspect is what I like, I know where I am on the aerial photograph, but no one else does (except in a general sense-OB's out on the XYZ alignment). I carry the cell phone when I'm in the field, otherwise it's in the vehicle. Though it isn't on unless I'm calling someone. :-)
Thanks! That's good information. I could always pick up blocks a few at a time, if I go that route...and it does seem the simplest.
*yawn* Well, so much for making it to an eight o'clock service...not that I had my heart set on it. But I really seriesly slept in. Guess I needed it. Maybe that's why I was so crabby yesterday. ;-)
Pausing for a late breakfast now. Got to see some of the weather yesterday, looking out the garage door as we boxed. :)
Isn't it exciting!?
I'm starting to feel the first twinges of sadness about leaving my friends and family behind. Spent yesterday with my sister and some friends - hanging out by the pool and such.
But they've all promised to come up and visit, so it's not so bad. Besides, I'll have to come down now and again anyway. :-)
Yup, it's exciting. I'll miss Colorado a little but not much. And I'm sure by the end of the summer I'll be so ready to leave my family behind... heh...
Plus, without the precise coordinates, how is Chloe going to find you and download the locations of the bad guys to your PDA?
Yup. I know what you mean. ;-)
Off to run some errands.
Can you believe that Becky's school is requiring students to purchase a book to read ~now~? With only 2 weeks left of the year. Sheesh.
Gots groceries to do too. :-P
Back later...
Very difficult to set up a perimeter without proper coordinates.
Ah - there you are! I was just gonna post that you seemed to be sleeping in this morning...
Heh, "Download coordinates to my PDA" - Drink
"Perimeter" - DRINK - whoops (sun isn't over the yardarm). sigh
Take it easy, one box at a time, lift with your legs not your back, remember the truck's height - think that covers it. OB & LSA
Yeah...as I said in 2408. Didn't wake up until after eight.
I was dreaming I was at a place with a wave pool with a waterfall and dolphins. Vey odd, that. Maybe the rain did it.
Considering what I lightweight I am, it's probably better I never attempt the 24 drinking game. ;-)
