The Hobbit Hole XXIX - Until the stars are all alight...
http://freeper.the-hobbit-hole.net/ ^

Posted on 04/20/2006 2:10:46 PM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Until the stars are all alight

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

I hope they did. They deserve it soooooo much! And how wonderful after all those trails, they get to have none other than George W. offer congrats and encouragement to Steve (... and those other graduates, too, of course).

Evenin' all. Just back from a long trip to Virginia Beach, heh. We took the in-laws down to see one of their grandkids graduate from Regent University (Pat Robertson's operation) with a JD. Everyone was vey proud. The weather was lovely (Pat took credit for that) the pomp and circumstance was appropriately done. But best of all, the adventures with 'the fam' was nothing short of madcap. It was just a down-and-back trip. 4-5 hours of easy driving. But still, we're plum tuckered.

Just get the regular cinderblocks. That's what I used. They should be less than $2.00 each at Home Depot. And, you can plan marigolds or other small plants in the holes.

Not only that, you can take 'em with you if/when you move.

Sigh, the plumber was in a fender-bender on his way over to our job; luckily, I don't think he was hurt, but those things tend to put a damper on the day. Told his boss just to let him go home and settle his jangled nerves. Guess we'll reschedule for Monday.

How many do you need for a fairly standard bed? Are they a foot long?

The moveability is a plus, you're right. Hadn't considered that. I wouldn't be spending on something I'd have to leave behind. And I could probably get 'em in the van if I wanted to buy 'em.

While you're here...what sorta mix do you put in a raised bed?

All the way to Virginia Beach and you didn't stop here? :-(

Did you come thru Richmond or go along the Eastern Shore? I've consideed Regent a couple of times for grad work. Never followed thru with it.

We just got back from Olive Garden for Nana's "official" birthday dinner. Lots of prom kidlettes out tonight. Jr's is next weekend.

You could use ~tires~

not a bad idea... mrsanad is plantin' taters in muh old tractor tires... they work well for stuff you plant in mounds... squash, zucs, cukes... you could use 'em for other things too... just gotta break outta the "row" mentality... pole beans steaduh bush beans... you get the picture...

check the yellow pages fer a place that sells concrete blocks... you can usually get seconds (off color) for less than a buck... a 4'x16' bed stacked 2 high takes about 72 blocks... so yuh might wanna go one high tuh start...

FWIW, I like hair's idea of a "summer hedge" of corn... plant at least three to four rows deep for pollination purposes... I wouldn't waste the precious space in a raised bed on corn... but thats just me...

The ones I got were 16x8, so it depends on how big you want to make the bed.

The Square Foot Gardening guy recommends a blend of peat moss, vermiculite and compost for your beds. I've done a combination of that 'cause I have trouble finding vermiculite.

You could do some things in tires... not everything but that and cinderblocks would make a nice trailer garden.

I'm half tempted to try that between me'n the naybers. They ain't built their fence yet.

But, I'm not gonna have much garden results until I get the trees down. They're all leafed out now and I have less sun than last year. Hardly any full afternoon sun in the back.

I only have about 11 I want taken down. And 'cause they have to come down in sections, that's pricin' an average of $1,000 each.

Not ~this~ summer.

Not out on parole.

Problem is, none of these trees can be dropped without hittin' a naybers house. Not that I'd necessarily mind that...

(back later)

Actually....

One year I had catnip in the corn rows. Mr. DarcyCat and Emily hung around the catnip all day and kept the squirrels away.
